In 2020, University of Michigan researchers demonstrated pliable zinc-air batteries that could wrap around toy robots, storing energy across the body instead of in only one centralized battery pack. The covering could also protect robot components. “Fat reserves” is a metaphor for distributed energy storage, not biological tissue or fuel metabolism.
How can a robot’s body store energy?
The Michigan design used conformal zinc-air cells: batteries shaped to fit around a robot’s exterior. Their membrane combined an aramid-nanofiber network with a water-based polymer gel. Hydroxide ions move between the zinc electrode and the air-side electrode, while the membrane supports ion transport and helps make the cell pliable. The University of Michigan described the cells as both an energy store and a protective covering (University of Michigan, August 19, 2020; the paper abstract is indexed by Science Robotics).

The biomimicry is about where energy is stored and what the storage material does. A conventional robot may devote space to a separate battery pack; this approach spreads cells over the body, where they can also serve as a shell around components. The researchers compared that arrangement with biological fat’s distributed energy-storage role, not with the chemistry or operation of living tissue.
What did the researchers demonstrate?
The team replaced the original batteries in regular-sized and miniaturized toy robots shaped like a worm and a scorpion. They wrapped zinc-air cells around the robots’ exteriors and wired the cells to their motors. This showed that the cells could power moving robots in a body-integrated arrangement; it was not a test of commercial robots or a measure of how far a robot could travel.

Does the battery give robots 72 times more power?
Not as a demonstrated increase in range, runtime, or motor output. The 2020 paper’s abstract reports total capacity 72 times greater than that of a standalone lithium-ion battery of the same volume. The university release presents the figure as an estimate for a scenario in which a robot’s exterior is replaced with zinc batteries instead of relying on one lithium-ion battery. It is a capacity comparison tied to that volume and configuration, not a measured 72-fold improvement in robot performance (paper abstract; Michigan release).
What are the durability limits?
The university reported that high capacity lasted about 100 cycles. It attributed degradation to zinc spikes that eventually pierced the membrane. The release contrasted this with 500 or more cycles expected from smartphone lithium-ion batteries; that comparison describes the reported research result, not a universal rating for every phone battery. Separately, the paper abstract reports cyclic performance exceeding 100 hours. Hours of cyclic performance and a count of recharge cycles are different measures and should not be treated as interchangeable.

How does this compare with a robot’s “circulatory system”?
A separate Cornell project, reported in 2019, integrated energy storage and actuation differently. Its soft, lionfish-inspired robot circulated zinc-iodide redox-flow-battery liquid. That fluid stored energy and also powered pumps and electronics, transmitted force, and actuated the robot’s fins. Cornell reported that its initial robot could swim upstream for more than 36 hours (Cornell, June 19, 2019).

| Approach | How energy is integrated | Demonstration and reported performance | Known limitation or qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Michigan zinc-air cells (2020) | Pliable cells wrap around the robot exterior; the covering stores energy and can protect components. | Cells powered worm- and scorpion-shaped toy robots. The paper abstract states a same-volume capacity comparison of 72 times that of a standalone lithium-ion battery. | Michigan reported high capacity for about 100 cycles and membrane damage from zinc spikes. The 72× figure is not a range or runtime result. |
| Cornell zinc-iodide flow system (2019) | Circulating battery liquid stores energy and supports pumps, electronics, force transmission, and fin actuation. | A soft aquatic robot swam upstream for more than 36 hours, according to Cornell. | This is a different robot and architecture; its reported swimming duration is not directly comparable with Michigan’s capacity or cycle-life figures. |
Both projects explore multifunctionality—making the energy system part of the robot’s structure or operation—but they use different chemistries, architectures, and tests. Their headline numbers do not establish which design is better.

Is this technology available to buy?
The cited university announcement said in 2020 that Michigan had applied for patent protection and was seeking commercial partners. That historical statement does not establish that a patent was granted, that licensing is currently available, or that the conformal battery is now a consumer product. The reported work is a research demonstration, not a product specification or retail offering.
