Can Python Dict Key Order Really Delete an Agent Field? What to Know

Python key ordering alone does not explain a missing agent field. Trace the value from its original mapping through serialization, parsing, schema handling, and agent input.

Python dictionary key order does not, by itself, explain why an agent field disappeared at 400 characters. Python 3.7 and later guarantee dictionary insertion order, and Python’s json module preserves order by default. But neither fact proves what happened in this incident: no reproducer or incident report establishes what the 400-character threshold measured or where the field was lost.

What the title’s 400-character claim establishes—and what it doesn’t

The number is part of the title, but its meaning is unspecified. It could refer to a field value, a serialized payload, a prompt fragment, a display limit, or another boundary. Without the affected input, code, and observed output, it is not possible to verify either the threshold or the claimed root cause.

Python’s documentation describes dictionary insertion order as guaranteed starting with Python 3.7. The current Python tutorial is the reference for that language behavior; the interpreter version in the incident still needs to be known before applying it.

What Python and JSON do with key order

The Python Software Foundation’s JSON module documentation says its encoders and decoders preserve input and output order by default. The documentation also notes that JSON object keys are strings, and Python dictionary keys are converted to strings during serialization. Setting sort_keys=True changes output ordering.

These behaviors concern ordering and representation, not whether a downstream agent treats one field as important. JSON object member order is not a reliable way to encode semantic priority for consumers. A historical Python issue about documenting order-preserving output provides context on the encoder’s behavior and JSON object ordering, but it does not verify this incident.

Trace the field through each boundary

A missing field at the end of a pipeline does not identify the layer where it disappeared. Capture the same minimal input at each boundary and compare it:

  1. Original mapping: Record the mapping before serialization, including its keys, key types, values, and insertion sequence.
  2. Serialized representation: Save the exact JSON text or bytes produced, along with serializer options such as sort_keys and any custom encoder.
  3. Received payload: Check what the receiving system actually got, rather than assuming it matches the sender’s output.
  4. Parsed structure: Inspect the decoded object and check whether key types or values changed.
  5. Schema or projection: Determine whether validation, field selection, or a transformation removed or renamed the field.
  6. Agent input and output: Verify what reached the agent and whether its final response omitted the field despite receiving it.

For a reproducible diagnosis, retain the exact Python version, input object, serialized output, parsed result, receiving schema, and the precise definition of “400 characters.” Then vary one factor at a time: insertion order, sort_keys, key types, custom encoders or decoders, and downstream field selection.

Make required fields explicit

If an agent depends on a value, represent that requirement through a schema or explicit named-field access, and validate that the field is present before using the payload. Do not rely on an object’s key order to tell a downstream consumer which value matters most.

For Python-to-JSON round trips, also account for the fact that non-string Python dictionary keys are converted to strings during serialization. A parsed result may therefore differ from the original mapping’s key types, even when the JSON text preserves ordering.

Keep context truncation separate from JSON serialization

The OpenAI Agents SDK documentation describes a distinct Responses API option: automatic truncation can drop older conversation items when context exceeds a model’s window. The Agents SDK models documentation does not connect that behavior to this title or establish a generic 400-character field limit. Do not treat context-window handling as evidence that JSON key order caused a field to vanish.
