Official sources reviewed do not confirm that police can directly access identifiable Goods and Services Tax (GST) records through the National Intelligence Grid (NATGRID). The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) says NATGRID connects government databases with authorised security and law-enforcement agencies, and reports police participation nationwide. That broad description does not establish that GST records are available to police through the platform.
GST law separately gives specified investigative powers to GST officers and requires police to assist those officers. Neither proposition proves a direct police-to-GST-records access route through NATGRID.

What NATGRID’s official description does—and does not—say
MHA describes NATGRID as a platform that “connects multiple government databases, including immigration, banking, telecom, and travel records, with authorized security and law-enforcement agencies.” It says the platform supports real-time information access for intelligence-led investigations. This describes NATGRID’s broad role; it is not an inventory of every connected database or a grant of access to every participating agency.

What GST law authorises
The Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) Act describes powers for GST officers acting in GST administration and proceedings. It does not, in the provisions cited here, establish that police can directly search GST-system records through NATGRID.
Investigative powers belong to specified GST officers
The CBIC-hosted Act text provides specified powers concerning inspection and search or seizure to a proper officer not below Joint Commissioner rank, subject to statutory grounds and written-authorisation requirements. It also provides summons powers and authorised access to a registered person’s business premises for revenue-protection purposes. These are powers under GST law, not evidence of a general police login or query entitlement to GST records.

Section 70(1) states: “The proper officer under this Act shall have power to summon any person whose attendance he considers necessary either to give evidence or to produce a document or any other thing in any inquiry in the same manner, as provided in the case of a civil court under the provisions of the Code of Civil Procedure, 1908.” This is the Act’s statutory wording on summons by a proper officer; it does not describe NATGRID access. Section 72 says police, railways, customs and specified revenue and tax officials shall assist proper officers in implementing the Act. That establishes a duty to assist GST officers where the Act applies. It does not say that police may independently query GST databases or receive GST records through NATGRID.

Does other official material show a GST-related NATGRID use?
A search-result excerpt for the Income Tax Department’s 2025 Search and Seizure Manual describes authorised users making requests to provider organisations and gives an example involving export data retrieved using HSN and IEC codes. HSN refers to product classification codes; IEC is an Importer Exporter Code. This is a tax-adjacent trade-data example, not confirmation that police can access GST returns or taxpayer records. - 10 March 2015: MHA said the then-applicable Cabinet Committee on Security mandate required NATGRID to obtain financial-sector information through the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), which had appointed a nodal officer to interact with NATGRID. The reply also said NATGRID was exempt from the RTI Act through a 2011 notification. What would verify a police–GST–NATGRID access route?
A current government order, access policy, data-sharing agreement or authoritative written confirmation would need to identify more than NATGRID’s general connection to law enforcement. To establish the specific claim, it would need to explain:
- which police user classes may initiate a query and who approves it;
- which provider holds the information, including whether GSTN or CBIC supplies it;
- the legal basis and any threshold or authorisation required;
- which records or fields may be returned, and for what permitted purposes; and
- what query logging, audit, oversight and redress mechanisms apply.
The official material cited here does not resolve those details for a police–GST–NATGRID route. It also provides no published statistic on police queries of GST taxpayer records through NATGRID. The sources describe institutional arrangements and legal powers; they do not determine the legality of any particular query.
