Can Pokémon Transferred from FireRed and LeafGreen Return to Their Original Game?

Pokémon migrated from original GBA FireRed or LeafGreen games to Pal Park cannot return. The return rule for Switch rerelease transfers to HOME is not established by Nintendo’s cited FAQ.

It depends on which versions and transfer route you mean. On the original Game Boy Advance games, a Pokémon migrated from Pokémon FireRed or Pokémon LeafGreen to Pokémon Platinum through Pal Park cannot return to its GBA cartridge. For the Switch rereleases, Nintendo confirms transfers to Pokémon HOME are planned, but the official FAQ does not establish whether those transfers can be reversed.

Original GBA games: Pal Park migration is one-way

If you mean an original GBA cartridge and the Pal Park route into a compatible Nintendo DS game such as Pokémon Platinum, the answer is no. Nintendo’s Pokémon Platinum instruction booklet says that once migrated, Pokémon “will never be able to go back to their original GBA Pokémon series Game Pak.” The Pokémon are removed from the GBA game as part of the migration; it is not a reversible trade.

How the original route worked

In Pokémon Platinum, the documented process required a Nintendo DS with a GBA Game Pak slot and the National Pokédex. Insert the GBA cartridge, select “Migrate From” from the Platinum start menu, then catch the migrated Pokémon in Pal Park. The game allowed six Pokémon per GBA Game Pak per 24 hours. Pokémon holding Mail or knowing a hidden move could not be migrated.

Switch rereleases: HOME returnability is not established here

Nintendo’s FAQ for the Switch versions says players will be able to transfer Pokémon from FireRed and LeafGreen to Pokémon HOME. That confirms an outbound route, but the FAQ does not say whether Pokémon sent from these rereleases can be transferred back. It also does not, by itself, establish that the feature is currently available. Check the current instructions for your exact game before moving a Pokémon you want to keep in the rerelease.

Local trading is a different operation

Nintendo says the Switch rereleases support local wireless connectivity and trades through the Wireless Club, while online play is unsupported, as described in its connectivity FAQ. Those are in-game trades between players, not evidence that a Pokémon transferred to HOME can be returned.

Do not confuse Pokémon Bank transfers with the Switch rerelease route

Nintendo’s Pokémon HOME support page says Pokémon sent from Pokémon Bank to HOME cannot return to Bank or be used with Nintendo 3DS titles. That rule applies to the Bank-to-HOME step; it does not establish what happens on a transfer from the Switch rereleases to HOME. Nintendo’s Bank service notice says HOME Premium is required for transfers from Bank, Bank is free for existing users, and Bank and Poké Transporter are no longer available to download.

Check the exact transfer prompt before confirming

  • GBA cartridge to Pal Park: Treat the migration as permanent; the Pokémon cannot go back to the original GBA game.
  • Switch rerelease to HOME: Nintendo confirms planned outbound support, but the cited FAQ does not establish a return path.
  • Bank to HOME: Pokémon cannot return to Bank or be used with Nintendo 3DS titles.
  • Local Switch trade: This is a separate in-game trade, not a reversal of an external transfer.
