Can Plex on Google TV Access a Remote Media Server Safely?

Plex on Google TV can connect securely to a remote Plex Media Server when the app and server support secure connections. Here’s how to configure access and avoid insecure fallback.

Yes. Plex lists Android TV as supporting secure connections to Plex Media Server, and Google TV devices can run Plex’s regular Android app. For a safety-focused setup, leave the app’s Allow Insecure Connections setting at Never. Remote access also requires the server to be reachable from outside your home network; that network setup is separate from whether the connection is encrypted.

This is based on Plex’s platform and support documentation, not testing of every Google TV model or app version.

Is Plex remote access secure?

Plex says communication and streaming are secure when a supported Plex app connects to a Plex Media Server that can provide a secure connection. Its secure-connection documentation lists Android TV as supported. Google TV devices that run Plex’s regular Android app therefore have a documented secure route to a remote server, though the exact behavior can depend on the device, app version, and network configuration.

Two separate conditions matter: the server must be reachable remotely, and the app-server connection must use a secure connection rather than falling back to ordinary HTTP. Enabling Remote Access addresses reachability; the secure-connection settings govern encryption and fallback behavior.

  • Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound

Plex identifies exceptions: Plex Companion casting is not always secure, and manually added connections in certain apps are not secure. The Android TV app’s documented support should not be treated as a guarantee that every casting method or manually configured route is encrypted. Plex says apps typically indicate when a connection is insecure or when an insecure connection is blocked.

How do I set up Plex remote access on Google TV?

1. Install and link the app

Plex says official Android TV and Google TV devices can run its regular Android app from Google Play. Sign in or link the big-screen app to your Plex account; Plex commonly uses a four-character code for this. Linking helps the app find servers you own or have permission to use and supports secure connections when the server is also signed in.

2. Enable Remote Access on the server

  1. In Plex Web App, open Settings > Server > Remote Access. Make sure the server is signed in to a Plex account.
  2. Allow Plex to attempt automatic router configuration. Plex uses UPnP or NAT-PMP when available.
  3. If automatic setup does not work and you configure forwarding manually, map the chosen public port on the router to internal port 32400 at the server’s private IP address. Enter the chosen external port in Plex’s manual-port setting.
  4. Check that the Remote Access status reports successful setup, then try connecting from Google TV while it is on a different network.

A failed setup can result from a double-NAT network or an incorrect manual forward, among other router issues. Plex’s Remote Access instructions were last modified September 8, 2026: Remote Streaming (Setting Up Remote Access).

Port forwarding makes the server reachable; it does not itself secure the stream. Plex describes the distinction in its Network settings documentation and secure server connections guidance.

Should I allow insecure connections in Plex?

For the Google TV client, Never is the conservative choice. It prevents insecure fallback. On the server, Required enforces secure connections, while Preferred favors secure connections but allows regular HTTP if a secure connection cannot be established or the client does not support it. Preferred is Plex Media Server’s default.

Setting Behavior Trade-off
Server: Required Accepts only secure connections. Enforces secure transport, but a client that cannot connect securely will fail to connect.
Server: Preferred Prefers secure connections; permits regular HTTP fallback when needed. More compatible, but does not rule out an insecure connection.
Android TV app: Never Does not allow insecure connections. Conservative client setting; an unsupported or misconfigured secure route may fail instead of falling back.
Android TV app: On same network Allows insecure connections on the same network. Allows local-network fallback; it is less restrictive than Never.
Android TV app: Always Allows insecure connections. Broadest fallback; not the safety-focused option.

On Plex Media Server, open Settings > Server > Network and reveal advanced settings to find Secure connections. In the Android TV app, find Allow Insecure Connections in its settings. Plex’s Android TV and Network settings documentation describes these choices; check Plex support if labels or menu placement have changed.

What if Google TV cannot connect securely?

Plex notes that DNS rebinding protection on some routers or DNS providers can interfere with secure local connections. Its troubleshooting guidance discusses DNS configuration remedies. In some cases, Remote Access may let Plex connect through the public or WAN address instead, but Plex can then classify playback as remote. That may affect quality selection and remote bandwidth or transcoding limits. Make router or DNS changes only with the relevant device documentation and an understanding of those effects.

Does remote playback require a Plex subscription?

Network access and playback eligibility are different questions. Plex’s requirements article, last modified April 10, 2026, says remote personal-video playback in apps affected by requirements introduced from April 29, 2025 requires Plex Pass on the server administrator’s account or the viewer’s account, or a Remote Watch Pass. Its listed affected apps include Android mobile, iOS mobile, PlayStation, desktop, Roku, supported Smart TVs, web, and Xbox; it does not list Android TV. Plex says additional apps may be included as its newer playback experience rolls out, so that list does not establish a current Google TV requirement. Check Plex’s current remote playback requirements if playback is blocked.
