The report places the option in the fingerprint settings under Security and privacy, but does not identify compatible Pixel models or software builds. So check your phone for the toggle rather than assuming it is available on every Pixel.
What screen-off fingerprint unlocking does
With the reported setting enabled, a supported Pixel can respond to a fingerprint on its under-display sensor while the display remains off. That removes the preliminary step of waking the screen; it does not mean the phone unlocks without fingerprint authentication.

Dhruv Bhutani’s September 12, 2026, Android Police report describes the option as part of Android 16 QPR2. It is a report of the author’s experience, not a Google announcement or official compatibility statement. The report does not specify which Pixel models or QPR2 builds include the toggle.
Where to look for the setting
Open Settings and look under Security and privacy for the fingerprint settings and an option to unlock while the screen is off. The report identifies that general location but does not give a complete menu sequence, so labels and placement may differ on your device.
#1 Best Overall
- Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
- Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
- If you find the option, enable it and test with the display off.
- If it is absent, the report does not establish whether your model or build is unsupported, whether a rollout is incomplete, or whether another setting affects visibility. It does not say the option is enabled by default.
How it compares with the alternatives
| Approach | What happens before authentication | What the report establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Screen-off fingerprint setting | Place a registered finger on the under-display sensor while the screen is off. | Reported for Android 16 QPR2, but supported models and builds are not stated. |
| Always On Display | Keep the display’s always-on information visible, then use the fingerprint sensor. | Bhutani describes this as a previous workaround and a battery-life trade-off in his experience; no measured battery impact is given. |
| Wake the display first | Tap the display or press the power button, then authenticate. | The report describes these as the extra steps the new option can avoid. |
What is not known about battery life or compatibility
The report provides no battery measurements, unlock-speed tests, or security comparison between these approaches. Its qualitative comment about Always On Display should not be read as proof that screen-off fingerprint unlocking saves battery. Google’s guidance, any device-management restrictions, and the exact model and build requirements are also not established in the report.
