Can PHP Validate a Form, Redirect, and Pass the Data as POST?

A normal PHP redirect does not carry submitted fields into another POST. Use 303 for the usual post-submit result page, and choose a form or server-side request when a destination truly needs POST data.

Not with a normal redirect. A PHP Location response tells the browser where to go; it does not turn the current form submission into a new POST containing the same fields. For a typical successful form submission, validate and process the POST, then send a 303 See Other redirect to a results page that loads with GET. If another page must receive a browser POST, submit a form to that page instead of relying on a redirect.

What happens to POST data during a PHP redirect?

When a form uses method="post", its fields are sent to the script named by the form’s action. PHP makes those fields available in $_POST. A redirect is a response header, not a mechanism for copying that request body into another request. The browser makes the follow-up request according to the redirect status code.

PHP’s header() manual describes 303 See Other as the status intended to direct a user agent to another resource after a POST-activated script. A 303 sends the browser to the destination using GET. By contrast, 307 Temporary Redirect preserves the original method and body, so the destination may receive the POST again. Use a 307 only when that repeat POST is deliberate.

How should a standard form handle validation and success?

Show validation errors on the form

Validate on the server: browser-side checks can help users, but they can be bypassed or altered. Check the expected fields, types, required values, lengths, and application-specific rules before using the data. If a submission is invalid, render the form with field-specific errors rather than redirecting just to carry the submitted values elsewhere.

Repopulate only values that are safe and useful to show again. Escape every value for the context where it is rendered. For HTML text or attribute output, PHP’s form guidance demonstrates htmlspecialchars() to encode characters that could otherwise be interpreted as markup. See PHP: Dealing with Forms and PHP: Variables From External Sources.

Redirect after successful processing

Once validation and processing succeed, send a 303 redirect to the ordinary result or confirmation page. This Post/Redirect/Get pattern means refreshing the destination reloads it with GET instead of resubmitting the original POST.

<?php
// Example assumes the request has already been validated and processed.
header('Location: /confirmation.php', true, 303);
exit;

Send the header before any page output, including whitespace outside PHP tags. If output has already been sent, PHP may be unable to change the response headers. Keep redirect handling before template rendering and terminate the script after the redirect so later code does not continue running.

How can the next page use data after a 303?

A 303’s destination receives a GET, not the original POST body. If that page needs temporary state, keep only the necessary validated data on the server, such as in session-backed flash data, and remove it after use or expire it promptly. Do not blindly copy the whole raw $_POST array into a session: minimize retained data and avoid storing values the next page does not need.

Sessions belong to the application context; they do not automatically hand session data to another domain. Do not put secrets or sensitive form values in a redirect query string. URLs can be exposed in browser history and other places. If the information is sensitive, keep it server-side or use a specifically designed secure integration.

What if another site must receive the data as POST?

If the user’s browser must make a POST to a different origin, give the browser a form whose action is the destination and submit that form. A server response can contain the form and use JavaScript to submit it automatically, but should provide a working manual submit option where practical. Make the transfer expected and transparent, send only required fields, and verify that the receiving service accepts the request and its security requirements.

A PHP cURL request is different: it sends an HTTP request from your server to the remote service. It can POST data server-to-server, but it does not navigate the user’s browser to that service. Choose it when a server-side integration is intended and implement suitable authentication, transport security, input validation, and error handling.

Approach Who makes the next request? Method and data at destination Typical use
303 redirect Browser GET; original POST body is not forwarded Show a success or result page after processing
307 redirect Browser Original method and body are preserved Deliberately repeat or forward the same request
Browser-submitted HTML form Browser POST with the form fields you provide Send a user’s browser POST to another endpoint
PHP cURL request PHP server Server sends a POST to the remote service Integrate with a remote service without navigating the browser

Choose the pattern that matches the destination

  • Invalid input, same application: show errors and safely repopulate appropriate fields in the form response.
  • Successful submission, normal page: process it, then redirect with 303 to a GET page.
  • Temporary data needed on that GET page: retain only necessary validated state server-side and expire it after use.
  • Another origin must receive a browser POST: use a browser-submitted form, not a normal redirect.
  • Remote server needs the data but the browser should not navigate: make a server-side HTTP request such as cURL.
