Dallas Goedert is out against the Rams in Week 4, but his absence does not make Zach Ertz a guaranteed full-time replacement or a must-start. Philadelphia is expected to use Ertz and Johnny Mundt together; NBC Sports considers Ertz a possible TE2, while describing both options as unappealing. Treat the change as a modest boost to the Eagles tight end group, not a one-for-one transfer of Goedert’s fantasy production.
What Goedert’s Week 4 status means
The NFL’s official Week 4 injury report lists Goedert with a knee injury, no practice participation, and an out designation. The Eagles injury report also lists him as a DNP with a knee injury. Those reports establish his status for this game, not a return date.

NBC Sports reported on October 2, 2026, that Goedert would miss Philadelphia’s Week 4 game against the Rams and that Ertz and Mundt would replace him. The Eagles depth chart updated October 3 lists both among the team’s tight ends, alongside Goedert, E.J. Jenkins, and Josiah Deguara. A depth chart confirms roster context, but it does not establish who will lead the tight ends in snaps or targets.
Who benefits from Goedert being out?
Zach Ertz
NBC Sports views Ertz as a possible TE2, citing his history and the opportunity created by the injury. That is a cautious, outlet-specific assessment for Week 4—not a universal ranking or a promise of a particular workload. He is the more defensible of the two replacements if you need a tight end, but the report does not make him an especially appealing play.

Johnny Mundt
Mundt is expected to share the replacement work with Ertz. The available Week 4 reporting does not establish a dependable target, route, or snap advantage for him over Ertz, so do not assume he inherits Goedert’s role simply because Goedert is inactive.
There is no cited Eagles-specific numeric projection for either backup. Without verified game-week usage and a scoring-format-specific projection, assigning either player a precise fantasy-point line would imply more certainty than the evidence supports.

Why the tight end room gets a modest boost—not a clean handoff
A 2026 Slate Stats analysis of regular-season games from 2018 onward compared players with their own trailing four-game form and controlled for what happened when a team’s leading tight end played. Across its multi-team sample, the analysis reported the following average reception changes when the leading tight end was absent:

|---|---|---|---|
| Tight end room | +0.492 | 1,024 | 9.57 |
| Receivers | +0.107 | 2,160 | 2.29 |
| Running backs | -0.045 | 1,259 | -0.92 |
These are aggregate results from Slate Stats’ analysis, not an Eagles forecast or a fantasy-points estimate. The same analysis found that tested clues—including depth order, snap share, route depth, and recent targets—correlated only about r = 0.02 with identifying which teammate would benefit. Its “about 60%” figure describes how much vacated production one player usually takes in an individual week; it does not identify that player in advance. The practical implication is that the room may gain modestly while the individual winner remains difficult to predict.

How to decide whether to start Ertz or Mundt
There is no single answer without knowing your league’s scoring and alternatives. Before choosing, weigh these factors using current Week 4 information:
- Expected routes and snaps: Give more weight to a role that current game-week reporting verifies; the cited sources do not supply a reliable route forecast for Ertz or Mundt.
- Targets and red-zone work: A demonstrated chance to receive passes or score is more useful than roster order alone.
- Scoring format: Reception bonuses and tight-end-premium scoring can change how valuable a modest reception expectation is.
- Your alternatives: Compare either Eagle with the tight ends already on your roster or available on waivers. The case for a replacement is stronger when your other option has a poor role or is unavailable.
- Game-week status: Check the latest injury and active/inactive information before kickoff, particularly if relying on a player whose role is already uncertain.
In a standard lineup decision, Ertz is a possible TE2 rather than a secure starter; Mundt is also part of the expected committee, with no established individual edge in the cited reports. If your league offers a strong alternative, the available evidence does not justify forcing either replacement into the lineup.

What this injury report does—and does not—tell you
Goedert’s out designation applies to Week 4 against the Rams. It is not a medical prognosis or a timetable for his return. The cited reporting establishes neither a return week nor an exact fantasy projection for Ertz or Mundt. Recheck official reports for any later game, because injury status and replacement roles can change week to week.
