Not by itself, according to Owncast’s documented workflow. Owncast accepts an incoming RTMP broadcast; its documentation does not describe a built-in scheduler that selects prerecorded videos and sends them onward to YouTube. To schedule separate YouTube broadcasts, use YouTube Studio with an encoder or scheduled-playback system. If you also want Owncast to receive the program, configure the encoder to send a separate output there.
What Owncast does—and what it does not document
Owncast is the receiving end of a broadcast workflow: broadcasting software sends an RTMP stream to the Owncast server. Its documented setup uses a stream key at the /live/ path, with TCP port 1935 as the default RTMP port. The port can be changed in server configuration. Owncast says, “In general Owncast is compatible with any software that uses RTMP to broadcast to a remote server.” Owncast’s broadcasting documentation explains that ingest workflow; it does not document an onward relay from Owncast to YouTube or a built-in prerecorded-video scheduler.

That is a limit of the documented feature set, not proof that no plugin or custom system could be built. The straightforward documented approach is to have an encoder or playback scheduler send the video to YouTube directly, and—if needed—send a second output to Owncast.

- Create the event: In YouTube Studio, open the Manage tab in the Live Control Room and schedule a live stream. Set the title, audience, visibility, and scheduled start time for each broadcast.
- Choose a playback encoder: Use an encoder or scheduled-playback system that can play the intended prerecorded file and transmit it to YouTube’s ingest server using the server URL and stream key associated with the event. Confirm that it supports scheduling and starts the correct file at the correct time; merely scheduling an event in Studio does not schedule local file playback.
- Connect the encoder: Start the encoder at the appropriate time. YouTube’s guidance says to check Live Control Room once the stream preview appears; depending on the setup, an operator may need to select Go live.
- Repeat for each video: Create a distinct scheduled broadcast for each event and configure the playback system to use the corresponding media and event details. YouTube’s help documentation describes creating scheduled streams and connecting an encoder: Schedule a live stream.
YouTube’s encoder guide also names the AJA HELO Plus and says its optional PlayToStream functionality can schedule prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live without a computer. That is a direct-to-YouTube hardware alternative, not evidence that the device is compatible with Owncast. Check current availability and configuration with the manufacturer before choosing it. Send the same program to Owncast as a second destination
If the same program should appear on Owncast and YouTube, configure the upstream encoder or automation to send a separate output to each destination: YouTube’s ingest URL and event stream key, plus Owncast’s RTMP endpoint and stream key. This is a practical inference from the documented endpoints, not a tested or officially specified dual-output playlist recipe. Check that the exact encoder supports simultaneous outputs and scheduled file playback. Owncast’s FFmpeg example demonstrates sending a stream into Owncast; it is not a ready-made prerecorded playlist scheduler or an Owncast-to-YouTube relay. Owncast’s FFmpeg instructions.
For an Owncast input, the documentation recommends H.264 video and AAC audio for compatibility, with a keyframe every two seconds. The sustainable quality also depends on the server’s capacity, network speed, and processing resources. If using FFmpeg, its -g option counts frames: at 60 frames per second, -g 120 corresponds to a two-second keyframe interval. These are encoding considerations for the Owncast destination, not a complete YouTube preset; follow the selected encoder’s and YouTube’s current requirements for the YouTube output.

How YouTube’s broadcasts and streams relate
YouTube distinguishes a broadcast—a distinct video or event—from a stream, which carries the audio and video. Its API documentation allows one stream resource to be reused by multiple broadcast resources scheduled at different times. Only one event can be live at a time, and each broadcast remains a distinct video. This API-level model can help when building automation, but it does not schedule prerecorded-file playback by itself. YouTube Live Streaming API documentation.
YouTube says live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after they end. If you need separate event pages and archives, plan separate broadcasts rather than assuming one continuous feed will create the event structure you want. YouTube’s live-stream scheduling guidance.

Troubleshooting the scheduled setup
- YouTube event is scheduled, but nothing is playing: A scheduled event does not itself play a video file. Confirm the encoder or playback system has the correct file, event stream key, and start time configured.
- The preview appears, but viewers cannot see the broadcast: Check Live Control Room. Depending on the setup, select Go live after the encoder preview appears.
- Owncast shows no incoming video: Check the RTMP destination, the stream key and
/live/path, and the server port. Owncast uses TCP 1935 by default unless its configuration changes that port. - Owncast playback is unstable or incompatible: Check that the output uses H.264 video and AAC audio, and that keyframes are two seconds apart. Also check available server processing capacity and network bandwidth.
- The encoder only sends to one destination: Do not assume Owncast can relay the incoming signal onward. Use a tool that explicitly supports separate outputs, or choose a direct-to-YouTube workflow.
- The wrong recording appears in an event or archive: Match each scheduled broadcast to its intended file and event stream key, and verify the preview before going live.
Copyright and prerecorded content
Using prerecorded media as a live stream does not remove copyright obligations or guarantee that YouTube will allow or recommend the content. Use material you own or are licensed to stream, and review YouTube’s rules for the channel and content. A technical scheduler only controls playback and delivery; it does not establish your rights to the video or music.
