Can Owncast Restream a Playlist to YouTube 24/7?

Owncast alone does not loop and relay playlists to YouTube. A separate playout and encoder are needed, and adding Owncast means operating another destination in the chain.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Not by itself. Owncast is a self-hosted server that receives a live broadcast over RTMP and serves it to viewers through HLS. Its official documentation does not describe Owncast as a playlist player, loop controller, or YouTube relay. To play a playlist continuously on YouTube, you need a separate playout and encoding process that sends a feed to YouTube. Add Owncast only if you also want to host an Owncast viewing destination; a continuous broadcast is not an uptime guarantee.

What each part of the system does

A playlist-based broadcast involves separate jobs that are easy to confuse:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Playout: selects and plays the videos in order, then repeats them if configured to loop.
  • Encoding and delivery: turns that playback into a live stream and sends it to the destination’s ingest endpoint.
  • Owncast: accepts a broadcast over RTMP and makes viewer playback available through HLS. Its documented pipeline can process the incoming stream and optionally create quality variants; the work consumes server resources. Owncast’s broadcasting guide and video documentation describe this role.
  • YouTube: receives an encoder feed at the YouTube stream URL using the stream key configured for that broadcast. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain that destination setup.

These are not automatically one pipeline. Sending video into Owncast does not, by itself, republish that video to YouTube. The Owncast guides show how to broadcast into Owncast, not how to use it as a YouTube relay.

Choose whether Owncast belongs in the setup

If YouTube is the only destination

Use a playlist-capable playout source and an encoder or relay that sends directly to YouTube. Owncast is not required for that path. YouTube’s encoder workflow requires the encoder to use YouTube’s stream URL and key.

If you also want an Owncast viewing site

Send a broadcast to Owncast using a compatible encoder, then configure a separate output or relay for YouTube. The reviewed official documentation does not establish that Owncast can forward its incoming stream to YouTube, nor does it give a tested end-to-end configuration for this topology. Confirm that the chosen software can produce the required outputs and test both destinations before relying on it.

Owncast’s OBS guide and FFmpeg guide document ways to send a stream into Owncast. Its HLS embed guidance describes an HLS playback URL for compatible players; that is an Owncast output, not evidence that the URL is a playlist source to rebroadcast to YouTube.

How to build a DIY continuous playlist stream

There is no documented Owncast-native playlist-to-YouTube recipe. The steps below are the architecture decisions and checks you must complete with your chosen playout and encoder; they are not a claim that a particular combination has been tested. Follow the selected software’s current instructions for playlist format, looping, codec and encoder settings rather than assuming Owncast supplies those controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm YouTube eligibility. YouTube’s live-streaming tips say the channel must be verified and must have had no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. Check the current guidance and the channel’s status before building the workflow.
  2. Decide the destinations. If the stream is for YouTube alone, plan a direct encoder output to YouTube. If you need Owncast as well, verify that your encoder or relay can send compatible outputs to both; do not assume one platform forwards to the other.
  3. Prepare the playlist source. Choose software that can play your files in sequence and loop them, and verify that it can continue past the end of the list. Set up local media access and audio/video playback. The Owncast FFmpeg example is for live capture input and RTMP output, not a ready-made playlist loop command, so do not treat it as one.
  4. Configure the encoder destination. In YouTube Studio, obtain the stream URL and stream key for the intended broadcast and enter them in the encoder’s destination settings. Keep the key private; use a custom reusable key only if that fits your workflow and protect it as a credential. If Owncast is also a destination, configure its RTMP endpoint and key separately according to Owncast’s broadcasting documentation.
  5. Set and verify output compatibility. Choose resolution, frame rate, video and audio encoding, bitrate, and keyframe interval in the playout/encoder software according to the current YouTube requirements and the capabilities of your upload connection and server. The supplied platform documentation does not establish one bitrate or codec setting for this particular setup, so do not copy a guessed universal value. Check the encoder’s status and YouTube’s live preview before making the broadcast public.
  6. Test the whole chain. Run the playlist through the intended destinations, including a transition between files and a full loop. Check video, audio continuity, destination status, buffering, and whether the encoder recovers after a brief interruption. If Owncast is included, monitor its processing load and viewer playback as well as YouTube ingest.
  7. Arrange operations and recovery. The source, playout/encoder or relay, network, and—if used—Owncast server all need to remain available. Owncast documents running as a service for background and startup operation in its installation guide, but service startup is not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming. Plan monitoring and restart behavior for every component.
  8. Plan the archive separately. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. That is an archive limitation, not a statement that YouTube necessarily ends the live broadcast at 12 hours. If you need the complete program, make a local recording or another deliberate archive plan. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Reliability, capacity, and common failure points

“Around the clock” describes an operating goal, not a property Owncast guarantees. A failure in any required component can interrupt the feed. Owncast notes that processing demand and server capacity affect delivery; higher loads can lead to slower delivery or buffering. Test the actual configuration against the hardware you plan to run, as advised in its video documentation.

  • 【What You Get】Includes: HDMI Capture Card, USB 3.0 to USB-C Adapter, User Manual. Tips: Make sure your tablet’s OTG function is enabled before connecting. Test your HDMI device with a monitor first to confirm video and audio output, then connect to the Video Capture Card for recording.
  • YouTube shows no incoming video: check the destination URL and stream key in the encoder, confirm the correct broadcast is selected in YouTube Studio, and make sure the encoder is actually running.
  • Owncast has no broadcast: confirm the encoder targets the Owncast RTMP endpoint and stream key, and that the server is reachable. Owncast’s default RTMP port is TCP 1935, with the stream key accepted on the /live/ path; check your installation’s configuration and network rules against its broadcasting guide.
  • Playback stops at the end of the files: verify the playlist tool’s loop or repeat behavior. Owncast does not document itself as the playlist controller.
  • Buffering or degraded delivery: check the upload connection, encoder load, and—if Owncast is in the path—server processing capacity. Lowering output demands may help, but choose settings against the platform’s current requirements rather than guessing.
  • The stream does not resume after a restart: inspect whether the playout, encoder/relay, and server are configured to start and reconnect as intended. Owncast’s service setup helps run Owncast in the background; it does not restart or supervise every other part of the chain.
  • The live feed exists but the full replay is missing: check the stream duration and YouTube archive guidance. Keep a local recording if the complete program matters.

Copyright and channel policy still apply

Looping a playlist does not change the rights or policy status of its contents. Use material you own or are authorized to stream, and review YouTube’s current rules and account restrictions before broadcasting. Repeated or continuous playback is not, by itself, evidence that a channel qualifies for monetization; assess eligibility against YouTube’s current policies rather than assuming that a technically live stream is sufficient.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel continuously playing uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a simpler alternative to operating a playlist computer and relay: upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the upload as made up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
