That is not a guarantee that every GPT, browser, or device interaction is risk-free. The more clearly documented concerns arise when you share information with a GPT that uses an external service or when an AI feature retrieves web content.
What happens when you open a custom GPT?
OpenAI describes GPTs as versions of ChatGPT configured for particular purposes. A GPT can combine instructions, knowledge, and selected capabilities, such as web search or image generation. The page you open is not, according to the reviewed OpenAI documentation, a software download that installs a program on your computer.

That distinction answers the narrow virus question: the official materials reviewed do not identify merely viewing a GPT as a local software-installation or execution route. They also do not amount to an independent security audit of every GPT, browser, device, or possible vulnerability. OpenAI’s terms advise users: “Only use GPTs that you know and trust.” OpenAI Service Terms
What risks can arise when you use one?
Apps and actions can send information to external services
A GPT may connect to an outside service through an app or an action that calls an external API. If you interact with a GPT using one of these integrations, relevant parts of your input may be sent to that third party. Depending on the setup and the action, ChatGPT may ask you to approve a request before data is sent or an action runs. OpenAI says it does not audit or control how those services use or store data, so consider who receives your information before proceeding. OpenAI’s GPT data privacy FAQ

Apps and actions are separate integration features, and a GPT can use apps or actions, but not both at once. Actions connect to external APIs and are configured with authentication and a schema describing what the API can do. In some workspaces, administrators can restrict which domains actions are allowed to call; an action that fails those checks cannot execute. Web retrieval has a distinct data-handling risk
When an AI system retrieves web content, malicious content or URLs can be designed to expose sensitive information through requests the system makes. OpenAI’s January 28, 2026 security article discusses URL-based data exfiltration and safeguards intended to reduce this risk; it does not claim that browsing is safe in every possible sense. Is a shared GPT safe to open?
Opening the page alone is not documented as a computer-infection route. Before chatting, check the GPT’s description and purpose. If it uses an app or action, decide whether you trust the connected service and what information you are willing to send. Avoid entering passwords, financial details, confidential work material, or other sensitive information into an unfamiliar GPT or connected service.

A third-party GPT is made by another user and may rely on content or services that OpenAI does not control. Treat requests to connect an account, approve an action, or disclose information as separate decisions from viewing the GPT itself. OpenAI Service Terms

Can a custom GPT access files or control your computer?
The documented capabilities described here include instructions, knowledge, selected ChatGPT tools, apps, and API actions. The reviewed sources do not establish that simply opening a GPT gives its creator access to files on your computer or control of your device. An external-service connection can send relevant input or perform an API action, so review the service and the requested approval rather than treating all GPT interactions as equivalent.

Whether conversations may be used to improve OpenAI’s models depends on plan and settings. OpenAI says Business, Enterprise, and Edu data is not used for training by default; consumer-plan data may be used depending on opt-out settings. Check the data controls that apply to your account.
