MMO means “massively multiplayer online”; MMORPG means “massively multiplayer online role-playing game.” An MMORPG is a kind of MMO, but the MMO label alone does not mean a game is an RPG.
What do MMO and MMORPG mean?
MMO describes a game built around large-scale online multiplayer participation. It identifies the online-play context, not the game’s genre. MMORPG adds “role-playing game,” so it refers to an MMO in which playing and developing a character are defining parts of the experience.
Square Enix describes MMORPGs as games set in a persistent virtual world, where players take on characters, complete quests, develop those characters, and form parties. See its MMORPG definition.
How are MMO and MMORPG different?
| Term | What it describes | What it does not tell you |
|---|---|---|
| MMO | A large-scale online multiplayer setting or format | The game’s genre; it need not be a role-playing game |
| MMORPG | An MMO with role-playing as a defining part of the game, such as controlling and developing a character | A universal player-count threshold; the cited definitions do not establish one |
Epic Developer Community documentation puts the relationship plainly: “All MMORPGs are MMOs, but not all MMOs are MMORPGs.” Screen Australia’s glossary likewise treats MMORPG as a category within MMO.

Is every MMO an MMORPG?
No. MMO is the broader label. A game can support large-scale online multiplayer play without making role-playing the core genre. If character control and development are central to the experience, MMORPG is the more specific term; if not, MMO may still describe its online format.
How to tell which label fits
- Ask whether the game is a large-scale online multiplayer experience. If so, “MMO” may fit.
- Ask whether role-playing is central to the design. Look for a player-controlled character whose development and actions, often through quests, form a defining part of play. If so, “MMORPG” is more precise.
This is a practical way to distinguish the terms, not a binding industry standard. Some games sit near genre boundaries, so describing a title by its primary genre can be more useful than forcing it into a strict category.

Does “massively multiplayer” mean a specific number of players?
There is no universal player-count cutoff established by the cited definitions. They use “massively multiplayer” qualitatively, so it is better not to assign a specific number unless a game’s own documentation or another relevant source defines one for that title.
