Potentially—but only if one VPS can handle the combined workload and its full monthly cost stays below the separate plans it replaces. There is no reliable universal number of streams per VPS: the answer changes with each feed’s resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, whether the server encodes or merely relays the video, and the provider’s CPU and data-transfer limits.
When one VPS can be cheaper
A single VPS may cost less than several cloud plans when it has enough sustained compute capacity for all the feeds, enough outbound bandwidth and included transfer, and a total bill—including any overages and supporting services—below the price of separate plans.

That is a break-even question, not a stream-count rule. The official provider examples below are not performance benchmarks, and YouTube’s guidance does not establish how many independent streams a particular VPS can run. Treat low advertised prices as plan prices, not proof of 24/7 encoding capacity.
First distinguish encoding from relaying
Encoding or transcoding on the VPS
If the VPS creates or converts the video stream, it must sustain the combined encoding work of all active feeds in real time. Resolution, frame rate, codec, and encoder settings affect that load. A shared-vCPU plan may be attractive for light or variable workloads, but its low price does not establish that it can sustain several encodes continuously.

Relaying pre-encoded feeds
If each feed is already encoded and the VPS only forwards it to YouTube, the compute profile is different; outbound network capacity and transfer allowance still matter. Confirm exactly what the software does. A server that can relay a feed should not be assumed capable of encoding it.
Akamai describes shared CPU plans as cost-conscious and dedicated CPU resources as appropriate for sustained CPU use. DigitalOcean describes its CPU-Optimized Droplets as suited to sustained CPU workloads including video encoding. These are provider descriptions to guide plan selection, not independent tests of a specific stream configuration: Akamai’s compute plan types and DigitalOcean’s VPS plans.

Add the target bitrates of every stream the VPS sends to YouTube. YouTube’s example is straightforward: a 6 Mbps feed plus a 4 Mbps feed creates a 10 Mbps aggregate target. YouTube says the total bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth; its general streaming tips recommend 20% headroom, while its simulstream guidance advises aiming for 1.5 to 2 times the combined target bitrate for stability, especially on shared connections. For a 10 Mbps aggregate, that simulstream margin means targeting 15–20 Mbps upload capacity—not 10 Mbps exactly.

These are network-planning recommendations, not a VPS performance guarantee. Check the actual server’s outbound capacity, route to YouTube, and stability in its region. See YouTube streaming tips and YouTube’s simulstream guidance.
Choose settings feed by feed
There is no single bitrate that fits every stream. YouTube’s current encoder guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps and constant bitrate guidance. For example, its recommended H.264 bitrate is 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not benchmarks of what a VPS can encode. Check the current table for each codec, resolution, and frame rate before totaling the feeds: YouTube encoder settings. YouTube transcodes live streams into different output formats for viewers; that does not remove the VPS’s work of encoding or sending the input feeds.
Estimate the full monthly cost
Compare one VPS only after sizing it for the real workload. Add its instance charge, storage or other attached resources, outbound-transfer overages, any relay software or service, and a reasonable allowance for the operational impact if that one server fails. Then compare that total with the combined cost of the separate plans.

These are examples displayed on official provider pages in 2026, not like-for-like recommendations. Region, plan generation, taxes, billing, transfer overages, and availability can change the actual bill. Check the current regional plan details and transfer rules before calculating savings. Akamai’s example prices are on its Europe pricing page; DigitalOcean’s are on its VPS plans page.
A practical break-even check
- Describe each feed. Record its resolution, frame rate, codec, audio, target bitrate, and whether the VPS will encode, transcode, or only relay it.
- Size the aggregate bandwidth. Add the target bitrates of all feeds the server sends. Apply a stability margin; YouTube gives 20% headroom in its general tips and 1.5–2 times aggregate bitrate in its simulstream guidance.
- Check compute for the actual job. For encoding, test sustained CPU use and any hardware-encoder availability on the precise instance. Do not infer real-time encoding capacity from a plan’s vCPU count or its monthly price.
- Calculate continuous transfer. Use aggregate bitrate and operating hours to estimate monthly outbound data, then compare it with the provider’s included transfer and overage terms. A cheap instance can become a poor fit when the transfer allowance is too small.
- Compare equivalent totals. Add the VPS, storage or attached resources, transfer overages, and any relay service. Compare that with the sum of the separate cloud plans for the same number of feeds and operating period.
- Account for shared failure risk. With one instance, a server outage can interrupt every feed on it. Include monitoring, restart behavior, redundancy, and the cost of interruption in the decision.
- Test all feeds together. Run representative settings at the same time and observe CPU, dropped frames, throughput, YouTube stream health, and provider transfer use before relying on the setup around the clock.
Test eligibility and stream health before going 24/7
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days to enable live streaming. Follow its current live-stream setup requirements. Before treating a VPS configuration as ready, test the complete multi-feed workload, check each preview, and monitor stream health using YouTube’s streaming tips.
Copyright and reused material
Capacity does not establish that a stream is permitted or eligible for monetization. Use material you have the rights to stream, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and channel policies for the content and use case. A continuous stream of recordings is not automatically exempt from those rules.

When a cloud relay is—and is not—the answer
YouTube describes a cloud service that accepts one high-quality feed and distributes it to multiple channels, resolutions, or platforms. That can fit a multi-destination simulstream workflow. It is not the same as hosting several independent 24/7 source feeds on one VPS, so compare it only if distribution of one source is what you need: YouTube simulstream guidance.
