That is his account, not an independently verified product-history finding. Tasks.org also supports Google Tasks sync, but that sync does not carry every Tasks.org feature or field.
What Tasks.org combines
Google Tasks and Google Keep served different roles in Fedewa’s setup: Tasks handled to-dos and reminders, while Keep held shopping and other checklists. Tasks.org is designed as a task manager with lists, subtasks, tags, filters, recurring tasks, notifications, and reminders. Its documentation describes it as a free and open-source Android task management app, with offline use and several synchronization options. Tasks.org’s homepage identifies the software as licensed under the GNU GPLv3.

That makes it a plausible single home for action-oriented lists. It is not simply a replacement for every kind of note you might keep in Keep: the documented focus is tasks and reminders, rather than a general-purpose notes archive.
Why location reminders matter
Fedewa says he used Keep lists for shopping and relied on location reminders to connect a list with a store. After the reminder behavior he depended on changed, he tried Tasks.org. Tasks.org’s welcome documentation lists location-based reminders among the app’s features. The author reports that this made the combined workflow useful; the feature listing confirms it is documented, but does not establish how it performs on every device or Android configuration.

What Google Tasks sync does—and does not—carry
If you want to retain a connection to Google’s task service, Tasks.org documents Google Tasks synchronization. The important qualification is that sync is partial: Tasks.org’s synchronization comparison says fields including location, tags, recurrence, reminders, and location reminders do not sync through Google Tasks. A task may therefore remain available through Google Tasks while losing information or behavior that exists only in Tasks.org.
Before moving a working system, identify which features you actually depend on. If location alerts, recurrence, or tags are central, do not assume that the Google Tasks copy will preserve them. Keep the distinction clear between using Google Tasks as one synchronization route and transferring every Tasks.org capability to Google’s service.

Choose a sync route that fits your setup
Tasks.org documents several alternatives, including its own sync service, CalDAV, DAVx⁵, EteSync, and DecSync CC. These are not interchangeable: the comparison lists different requirements and trade-offs, and some options involve a Tasks.org subscription or possible third-party service costs. It also identifies end-to-end encryption for EteSync. Check the current comparison before choosing a route, especially if you need to sync across devices or already operate a CalDAV server.
- Google Tasks: documented as a sync option without the in-app subscription, but with the field limitations described above.
- Tasks.org sync: the app’s own service; subscription support is required.
- CalDAV and DAVx⁵: protocol-based options that may suit an existing compatible server or setup; service and app requirements vary.
- EteSync: an option whose comparison entry identifies end-to-end encryption; check its service terms and current costs.
- DecSync CC: another documented synchronization option; consult the current compatibility details for your devices.
Tasks.org’s subscription page lists a choose-your-price feature unlock beginning at $0.99 USD per year, and Tasks.org Cloud at $2.99 per month or $29.99 per year through Google Play. It also lists GitHub sponsorship of $3 per month or more. These are the rates published by Tasks.org and may change. The page notes that F-Droid users do not need a subscription to unlock in-app features, while Tasks.org Cloud requires sponsorship or a Google Play subscription. See Tasks.org’s subscription documentation for current terms.

Protect your lists with a separate backup
Tasks.org says it creates automatic backups daily at midnight and retains the latest seven. Manual exports are not pruned. Optional Google Drive upload applies only to backup files created after that setting is enabled, and attachments are not included in backups. The documentation also warns that uninstalling the app can remove its private backup directory. For anything you cannot afford to lose, export or copy backups to a separate location and do not treat attachment files as protected by the task backup. Details are in the backup documentation.

Tasks.org is a reasonable fit if your Google Tasks items and Keep checklists are mostly actionable lists, and you want reminders—including location-based ones—in the same Android app. It is less compelling if your Keep use depends on broad note-taking or if you expect Google Tasks sync to preserve every Tasks.org field. Choose your sync path around the features you need, then verify that those fields survive before relying on the new setup.
