Yes—but scheduling a YouTube livestream does not automatically choose a different OBS playlist. Prepare a VLC Video source for each playlist, then select the right source or scene manually for each event, or configure a scene-switching automation and test it. YouTube’s schedule and OBS’s media selection are separate parts of the workflow.
What OBS and YouTube handle separately
OBS’s VLC Video source can contain multiple media files and play them in order, on a loop, or shuffled. It is a playlist for that source—not a rule that picks another playlist when a scheduled YouTube event begins or ends. VLC must be installed for the source to appear in OBS; the OBS guide specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. See the OBS Media Sources guide.

YouTube’s scheduled event does not, by itself, assign an OBS playlist or start the encoder. YouTube’s encoder workflow has you connect the encoder using the stream URL and key, start the encoder, check its preview, and click Go live. Follow the current YouTube encoder instructions for your event.

YouTube also offers optional auto-start and auto-stop controls for supported stream configurations. Those concern starting or stopping a stream; they do not establish that OBS will switch to a different VLC playlist. Check the event’s current Live Control Room settings if you plan to use them.

Set up a different playlist for each event
- Install VLC if needed. If VLC Video is missing from OBS’s source options, install VLC. Match its architecture to OBS; the OBS documentation specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
- Create a VLC Video source for each playlist. In OBS, add a VLC Video source and populate its media list with the files for that event. Keep each playlist in its own source so you can choose it independently.
- Choose playback behavior. Set the file order, then choose whether that playlist should loop or shuffle using the source’s playlist controls. A source’s loop or shuffle setting affects its own files; it does not select the next event’s source.
- Put sources in separate scenes, or plan a manual selection. You can make a scene for each event’s playlist and switch to the correct scene before going live. Alternatively, select the appropriate source manually. Check that the chosen source is visible and playing.
- Schedule the YouTube event and connect OBS. In YouTube Live Control Room, create the scheduled event and use its stream URL and key to connect OBS. At the event, start the encoder, verify the preview, and click Go live as directed by YouTube.
- Test the whole sequence. Use the actual playlists and switching method. Confirm the expected files and scene appear, audio is present, the encoder preview is healthy, and the stream starts and ends—or continues—as intended. YouTube recommends setting up encoders ahead of time, checking the preview, and monitoring audio and video quality; see its live-streaming tips.
Manual selection or automation?
| Approach | What you do | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Manual | Select the prepared source or scene for each event, then check it in OBS and YouTube’s preview. | Simple to understand, but someone must make and verify the selection. |
| Automated | Configure a scene or source switch using a scheduling or other trigger, then test the full event sequence in your setup. | Reduces manual selection, but depends on a correctly configured and tested trigger. The cited official guides do not provide a shared built-in mapping between YouTube schedules and named OBS playlists. |
An OBS forum discussion suggests separate scenes and the Advanced Scene Switcher plugin as one possible automation route. That is community guidance, not an official step-by-step setup or a guarantee for every installed version. Confirm the plugin’s behavior and your trigger conditions with a test before relying on unattended switching.
Where playlist switching stops and stream control begins
- A VLC playlist advances among files in one source; it does not, just by being a playlist, choose a different source for the next YouTube event.
- A scene switch can show a different prepared source. The switch still needs a person or an automation mechanism.
- YouTube’s event schedule, encoder connection, preview, and Go live controls govern the broadcast workflow; they are not a built-in OBS playlist selector.
- The OBS and YouTube documentation cited here does not describe a native feature that maps each scheduled event to a named OBS playlist.
Troubleshooting
VLC Video is missing in OBS
Check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS. For 64-bit OBS, the OBS guide specifies 64-bit VLC. Restart OBS after installing VLC if the source still does not appear.

The wrong playlist appears when the event starts
Check which scene is active and which VLC source is visible before starting the encoder. If you use automation, inspect its trigger and target scene or source, then repeat the complete test; YouTube scheduling alone does not make this selection.
The YouTube event is scheduled, but the stream is not live
Scheduling an event does not start the encoder. Confirm OBS is connected with the event’s stream URL and key, start the encoder, check the YouTube preview, and follow the current Live Control Room instructions to go live.

The playlist does not advance or repeat as expected
Review the media files and their order in that source, then check its loop and shuffle settings. These controls apply to that source’s playlist, not to the selection of another event’s playlist.
The automation works in one test but not at the event time
Verify the configured trigger, timing, active scene, and target source in a full rehearsal. The available official documentation does not provide a version-specific recipe for automated selection after each scheduled event, so validate the exact setup you run.
