Sometimes. Norton may quarantine a Trojan, attempt to repair an infected file, or delete the file if it cannot be repaired. Quarantine isolates a detected item; it does not clean it. Back up important files before remediation when possible, and do not restore a quarantined file unless you have a specific reason to trust it.
What Norton may do when it detects a Trojan
“Remove” can mean different things in Norton’s cleanup process. A detected file may be isolated in quarantine, subjected to a repair attempt, or deleted if Norton cannot repair it. Which outcome occurs depends on the product workflow and the file; Norton does not promise that every infected file can be cleaned and preserved.

Quarantine: contained, not necessarily cleaned
In Norton’s Windows instructions, quarantine isolates a detected item so it cannot spread or infect the computer. The file may no longer be available to the program or task that used it, but quarantine is not the same as disinfecting the file. Norton says restoring an item does not repair it; a later scan may disinfect a restored item. Norton’s Windows quarantine guidance warns: “Restoring files from Quarantine poses a high security risk.”

For Windows, Norton Rescue Disk offers an automatic-fix option that attempts to remove malicious code while keeping the rest of each infected file intact. Norton says files it fails to repair are automatically deleted. That is a conditional repair attempt, not a guarantee that a file will survive. How the outcomes differ

For Mac, Norton says files that cannot be eliminated with current definitions are quarantined; some may be disinfected after a later rescan. Norton advises against restoring quarantined Mac files unless you are sure they are safe. Its Mac quarantine guidance does not establish the Windows Rescue Disk repair-and-deletion workflow for Mac.
Protect important files before cleanup
If the computer is usable and you can do so safely, make a backup of irreplaceable personal files before remediation. Keep backup media disconnected except while backing up or restoring when practical; this is a general precaution, not a Norton-specific guarantee. A backup only helps with files that were included in a configured backup set, and it does not prove that every copy is clean.

Norton’s backup restoration guidance describes restoring selected files or a backup set to the original location or a chosen destination. On a new device, the old folder structure may not be recreated. Do not assume a backup can restore a file that was never included in it.

If Norton quarantines a file you need
- Review the file’s details and source information in Norton before taking action. Norton recommends this review because restoring a quarantined file can put the computer at risk.
- If you believe Norton has identified a safe file by mistake, submit it to Norton for false-positive analysis rather than restoring it or adding an exclusion just to keep a program working.
- Restore only if you have a specific reason to believe the file is safe and understand the risk. A restore does not clean the file; scan it again and follow Norton’s current guidance.
If an ordinary scan cannot clean the Windows computer
Norton’s Rescue Disk article documents a Windows recovery environment for scanning and remediation outside the ordinary installed-product workflow. Follow Norton’s current instructions for your device, including the guidance about backing up data on the USB drive used to create recovery media. The automatic-fix option may preserve a repairable file, but Norton says an unrepaired file is deleted.

Do not rely on old Norton Power Eraser instructions: Norton says Power Eraser was discontinued on April 30, 2026, stopped working, and has no replacement. Norton directs users to its current security application and scan guidance in its Power Eraser notice. Product labels and screens can vary by Norton version and operating system.
