Researchers are testing enzyme-mimicking nanomaterials, or “nanozymes,” as cigarette-filter additives that can scavenge selected reactive oxygen and nitrogen species in laboratory smoke tests. Some studies also report reduced lung inflammation or injury in mice. These results do not show that the filters make smoking safe, reduce disease in people, or are available as validated consumer products.
What does it mean for nanoparticles to mimic enzymes?
Nanozymes are nanoparticles or nanostructured materials that catalyze chemical reactions in ways resembling natural enzymes. In cigarette-filter research, the goal is to make a material react with selected free radicals in smoke before they reach the smoker.

The studies discussed here focus chiefly on reactive oxygen species (ROS), and in some cases reactive nitrogen species (RNS). Those are only some of the many constituents in cigarette smoke. Reducing measured radicals does not establish that a filter removes all toxic substances, including nicotine, or meaningfully lowers overall exposure.

What have cigarette-filter studies found?
Manganese-doped cerium oxide, 2025
Chen and colleagues tested hollow manganese-doped cerium oxide (Mn-CeO₂) nanospheres. The material showed superoxide-dismutase-like and catalase-like activity, along with stronger hydroxyl-radical scavenging than undoped ceria. Incorporated into a commercial cigarette filter, it removed over 56.2% of targeted ROS under the authors’ test conditions. In a mouse passive-smoking model, the researchers also reported less pulmonary inflammation and histological lung injury than in controls. Alendronate-modified nanoceria, 2021
Zhou and colleagues studied alendronate-modified nanoceria, known as CeAL, as a filter additive. The paper describes superoxide-dismutase-like activity, hydroxyl-radical elimination, catalase-mimicking activity, and nitric oxide radical scavenging. It reports smoke-filter and mouse-model experiments; those results do not establish reduced health risks in people. Zhou et al., ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces
Carbon-dot and metal-organic-framework composite, 2024
Guo and colleagues introduced carbon-dot nanozymes and menthone into a gamma-cyclodextrin-based metal-organic framework (CDs/ME@MOF). The paper’s abstract reports over 90% scavenging efficiency for cigarette-smoke radicals, reduced odor irritation, and findings from a mouse model. The percentage describes the authors’ setup and endpoint; it cannot be directly compared with the Mn-CeO₂ result. Reduced odor or irritation is not proof that harmful exposure has been removed. Indexed abstracts for two additional studies report promising but assay-specific results: a 2026 Gardenia-derived carbon-dot study reports over 60% ROS and 90% RNS removal in an experimental filter setup, while a 2025 metal-free carbon-dot study reports up to 95.82% total ROS scavenging during cigarette combustion. How should the reported percentages be interpreted?
The percentages refer to different materials, smoke-generation conditions, assays, and measured endpoints. They are not results from a common comparative test, nor do they indicate what fraction of all toxic smoke constituents is removed.

Because the tests are not standardized across papers, these values cannot establish which material works best in a real-world cigarette or predict a person’s exposure. None is a percentage reduction in cancer risk, lung disease, or total smoke toxicity.

That has not been demonstrated. The evidence described in these papers consists of materials-science and toxicology research, including filter or smoke experiments and animal models. The reviewed sources do not report human clinical trials showing reduced disease or establish a reduction in overall toxic exposure.

One 2025 paper reports no significant systemic toxicity in measured serum biochemical markers in its mouse model. That limited finding is not proof of safety for people, long-term use, or every possible exposure to the material. Evidence and safety findings across the cited studies

Are nanozyme cigarette filters available to buy?
The studies describe experimental filter additives, not a validated consumer product. The available evidence does not establish that a marketed nanozyme cigarette filter exists or that a generic filter tip would reproduce the tested materials and results.
