Recent studies show that fluorine in polymers such as PTFE can be transferred into recoverable inorganic products, including potassium fluoride (KF) and calcium fluoride (CaF2). This is chemical breakdown, not conventional recycling that preserves the polymer. The results establish a research possibility—not a commercial process with proven economics, throughput, or environmental performance at scale.
What mineralisation means for fluoropolymer recycling
Fluoropolymers such as PTFE are valued for their chemical stability, which also makes their disposal and treatment challenging. In this context, mineralisation means breaking down the polymer’s organic fluorinated structure and converting its fluorine into inorganic fluoride-containing products. That differs from mechanical recycling, which aims to retain polymer chains, and from simply showing that the original material has disappeared.

The recycling opportunity is in the recovered fluorine-containing product. A process that destroys a polymer does not automatically recover fluorine in a useful form: product identity, isolated recovery yield, reagent reuse, energy and chemical inputs, emissions, and secondary residues all matter.

Two laboratory routes recover fluorine in different forms
| Route | Polymers reported | Conditions and inputs | Fluorine product and reported result | What the result establishes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Phosphate-enabled mechanochemical milling (Yang et al., Nature, 2025) | Includes PTFE and PVDF among the polymeric PFAS tested. | Solvent-free ball milling with potassium phosphate salts. In one PTFE experiment, milling with K3PO4 at 35 Hz for 3 hours. | Fluoride-containing products including KF and K2PO3F. In the analysed soluble fraction from the PTFE experiment, measured fluorine species were 84% F− and 15% PO3F2−. A recycling protocol isolated KF at 76% yield and recovered 96% of total phosphorus content. | Laboratory conversion and product recovery. Recovered phosphate maintained performance through two additional cycles; this does not establish indefinite reuse or industrial operation. |
| Molten sodium hydroxide treatment (Yanagihara and Katoh, Green Chemistry, 2022) | PTFE, PVDF, PCTFE, and VDF-HFP copolymer. | Molten alkaline hydroxide at elevated temperature and atmospheric pressure, followed by aqueous treatment with calcium chloride. The reported PTFE result used excess NaOH at 500 °C for 3 hours. | CaF2. Reported yields were 73.8% from PTFE, 83.7% from PVDF, 52.3% from PCTFE, and 84.0% from VDF-HFP under the reported conditions. | Laboratory mineralisation and calcium fluoride precipitation from several fluoropolymers. The high-temperature treatment and excess caustic are material process inputs; the reported yields do not establish economics or scale-up. |

How to interpret the phosphate-milling results
The phosphate route connects polymer breakdown to possible reuse of the recovered fluorine. Yang and colleagues report that K2PO3F can be converted into KF or tetraalkylammonium fluorides. In their recycling protocol, the isolated KF yield was 76%, while 96% of total phosphorus content was recovered. Those are distinct measures: the first is an isolated product yield, and the second describes recovery of phosphorus, not fluorine.
The PTFE experiment’s 84% fluoride and 15% fluorophosphate figures describe the shares of measured fluorine species in the analysed soluble fraction. They are not overall process yields. Similarly, analytical detection of fluorine products should not be conflated with the amount of a purified product that can actually be isolated.

The authors conclude that their approach offers “a route that not only controls the environmental impact of PFASs through highly effective mineralization, but it also contributes to the circularity of the fluorochemical industry.” That is their interpretation of a laboratory method; it does not demonstrate commercial circularity or prove life-cycle benefits at plant scale.
How this differs from combustion
A 2024 pilot-plant study examined combustion of a mixed fluoropolymer sample under conditions representative of European municipal and hazardous waste combustors. Its abstract reports non-detect to negligible PFAS in measured outputs and describes the sample as representing 80% of commercial fluoropolymers. That percentage describes the range represented by the sample, not the share of waste treated or recycled.

Combustion is relevant to destruction and emissions, but it is not the same as chemical recycling that captures fluorine in a product for potential reuse. A search-result highlight reported a PFOA stack-gas measurement of 0.20 ng/m³, slightly above a 0.09 ng/m³ limit of quantification; the study considered external contamination a likely explanation. This measurement should not be treated as evidence of fluorine recovery. See the 2024 pilot-plant study in Chemosphere.
What is not yet demonstrated
The results make chemical recovery a credible research direction, but the cited studies do not establish the practical system needed to process discarded fluoropolymer products at commercial scale. In particular, they do not demonstrate:

These are separate questions from whether a laboratory reaction can break down a polymer or yield a fluoride salt. A high destruction or analytical fluoride-release result alone cannot answer them.

Search-result abstracts describe a 2026 sodium-silicate mechanochemical process that produces sodium fluoride from polymeric and nonpolymeric PFAS, and a 2025 sodium-dispersion process for PTFE and PFAS. The available descriptions are not sufficient here to compare their conditions, yields, or scale evidence with the two studies above. They are emerging research leads, not grounds for claiming that commercial fluoropolymer recycling is already available. The 2026 JACS article and the 2025 Nature Communications article are the relevant publications.
