n8n is a credible self-hosted alternative for technically comfortable users, but the available documentation does not establish that it can replace every workflow or feature in Zapier, IFTTT, Make, or Power Automate. Self-hosting gives you control over the infrastructure and configuration; it also makes you responsible for operating and securing them. Activepieces is another self-hostable option to evaluate.
What “full control” means—and what it costs
With a self-hosted workflow engine, you choose where it runs and manage its configuration and upgrades. n8n documents deployment on your own infrastructure, on-premises, or in a private cloud. That flexibility shifts operational work to you: hosting the service is not the same as having a managed automation product.

The same vendor documentation distinguishes its managed cloud service, which reduces setup and maintenance work, from self-hosting. Treat these as n8n’s descriptions of its own offerings, not an independent comparison of all the named platforms. n8n hosting documentation · n8n’s comparison with Zapier
- Control: Self-hosting gives you direct responsibility for the environment and its configuration.
- Operations: You must plan for updates, backups, monitoring, access control, and troubleshooting.
- Workflow fit: You need to check that the apps, triggers, actions, and custom logic your automations rely on are supported. The cited material does not establish complete feature parity across these products.
Which self-hosted options are documented?
n8n
n8n is the best-supported candidate in the available deployment documentation for a technical user or small team prepared to run the service. Its Docker Compose guide provides a concrete self-hosting route, and its hosting documentation describes additional deployment choices. Those facts establish that it can be deployed this way; they do not show that a particular workflow will transfer unchanged.

Activepieces
Activepieces also documents a Docker Compose installation. It is a reasonable second candidate to test if you want a self-hosted engine, but the published minimum host figures below are not a performance comparison: the documentation does not define a matched workload for the two products.
Documented Docker Compose host requirements
The following are requirements stated by each product’s installation guide for its documented Docker Compose setup. They are not performance guarantees, recommended production sizing, or evidence that one product runs faster than the other.

Do not select a server solely by meeting a listed minimum. Workload size, concurrency, retention, and the surrounding services all affect what you need; the cited guides do not provide a sizing guarantee for your particular automations.

A VPS
A virtual private server is an option when you need an always-on service reachable remotely. n8n lists deployment guides for DigitalOcean and other cloud providers. Your own always-on hardware
A home server or mini PC may suit someone who already operates reliable, always-on hardware and is comfortable maintaining it. The minimum figures in the Docker Compose guides do not guarantee that a particular machine can handle your workload, and local hosting means you must account for remote access and availability yourself.
How to decide whether to move a workflow
Evaluate actual automations rather than assuming a broad platform-to-platform replacement. For each one, check:
Rank #4
- App and API coverage: Confirm that the target engine supports every service and operation the workflow needs, including its trigger.
- Logic: Identify custom code, branching, data transformations, and other behavior that may need to be rebuilt.
- Failure behavior: Check retries, error notifications, and what happens when an upstream service is unavailable or returns unexpected data.
- Credentials: Determine how each connection will be recreated and secured in the new environment.
- Availability: Decide what downtime is acceptable and whether you can maintain the host, networking, backups, and monitoring accordingly.
- Operational ownership: Be prepared to handle upgrades, security, and troubleshooting—or choose a managed service that takes on more of that work.
Migrate in stages, not by switching everything at once
- Inventory the existing automations. Record their triggers, connected apps, credentials, business-critical steps, and failure notifications.
- Choose representative workflows. Start with a small set that covers the integrations and logic you depend on, rather than beginning with every automation.
- Deploy a candidate engine. Follow the relevant official installation guide and set up the host and access controls before connecting important accounts.
- Rebuild and verify each workflow. Test trigger conditions, credential handling, data transformations, retries, and failure notifications. Check expected outputs against the existing workflow.
- Run the new version cautiously. Where practical, observe it before disabling the old automation; avoid letting both versions perform the same consequential action at once.
- Move the remaining workflows selectively. Keep an automation on its current platform if a required integration, behavior, or operational safeguard does not work adequately in the replacement.
When self-hosting is a poor fit
If you do not want to maintain a server, respond to outages, or take responsibility for its security and updates, self-hosting may trade one kind of control for work you do not want. A managed deployment can reduce setup and maintenance responsibilities. If control is the priority, but you are not ready to operate the infrastructure, compare managed options before committing to a server.
Finally, “replace Zapier, IFTTT, Make, and Power Automate” is too broad to promise from the deployment documentation alone. Whether n8n or Activepieces can replace your setup depends on your specific workflows and your ability to operate the service; validate both before retiring an existing platform.
