Multiple game studios can use the same generative AI service when they agree on what data may be shared, who can access it, how the provider may use or retain it, and who responds when something goes wrong. A shared service is not automatically a shared private workspace: actual protections depend on the service, its settings, contracts, and each studio’s obligations.
What does “shared” mean for a game studio?
A shared AI setup can mean several different things: studios may use the same vendor, the same organization account, a shared interface or orchestration layer, or a common retrieval store containing project files. Those arrangements create different exposure paths. Sharing a vendor does not by itself establish that one studio can see another’s prompts or files; equally, a common account, log store, or retrieval index may create access that the studios did not intend.

Map the full path of information: a studio user submits a prompt or file through an interface, which may route it to a model provider or subprocessor, save it in logs or a retrieval store, or send it into a feedback channel. Generated responses may also be retained, exported, or visible to other users. NIST SP 800-47 Rev. 1 provides a general framework for protecting information before, during, and after exchanges between organizations.

This is a working checklist, not a complete legal classification. A prompt can disclose sensitive information even when the attached file is not retained, and generated output can reproduce or expose information supplied as context. Set permitted uses by data class rather than treating every prompt as harmless or every AI feature as equivalent.
Will the AI provider train on our game code or assets?
There is no universal answer. Training, model improvement, feedback use, and retention are distinct practices, and the defaults can differ by product, data category, account configuration, and agreement. Check both the applicable contract and the live product settings for the exact feature and service version.

Unity AI
Unity’s AI Guiding Principles state that training Unity’s AI models directly on developer content is off by default. The principles separately describe an organization-level option to let Unity use Developer Data—including prompts, responses, interactions, code, and other content—to improve certain Unity AI models for all developers. Unity distinguishes those models from generative asset models, and says Unity Credits can be used by users in an organization. These are policy statements, not a substitute for confirming the current terms, settings, and feature in use.

Epic’s UEFN Supplemental Terms say Epic will not use Developer-Made Content, or license it to third parties, to train Generative AI Programs, subject to specified exceptions: localization training on corrections unless opted out, and feedback explicitly provided to the Developer Assistant. The terms also warn that Developer-Made Content shared in the service may be visible to others and may be captured or shared in gameplay footage and screenshots outside Licensed Products. This is not a general confidentiality promise for every Epic product or service.

What to verify in any provider’s terms
- Whether prompts, uploads, responses, feedback, or usage data may be used for training or other model improvement—and whether the rule is a default, an opt-in, or an organization-wide setting.
- How long inputs, outputs, and logs are retained; whether humans may review them; and whether deletion applies to backups and subprocessors.
- Which subprocessors receive data, where it is processed or stored, how incidents are reported, and what happens to data when the service ends.
- Whether the contract and settings cover every studio, account, feature, and geographic region in the planned deployment.
Can studios use separate access boundaries?
They should define boundaries at both studio and project level, then confirm that the chosen product can enforce them. Decide who may submit, retrieve, retain, or export each data class; whether prompts, files, outputs, and usage logs are visible across studios; and what happens when a contractor or employee leaves. Use separate identities and least privilege where available, with an approval path for sensitive material.
Do not assume a vendor’s shared-service architecture provides tenant isolation, project separation, or a particular deletion control unless the contract and product documentation establish it. NIST SP 800-47 Rev. 1 supports identifying exchanges and tailoring protections and agreements to organizational needs; it does not certify a specific service’s isolation features.

Can engine or asset terms block an AI workflow?
Yes. Provider terms are only one layer. Engine, marketplace, and third-party asset licenses may impose separate limits on inputs, prompts, training, disclosure, or reuse. Epic’s current Terms of Service, for example, restrict using code or content extracted from Licensed Products as training input for a Generative AI Program, or as prompt-based input when that program trains on input data. Confirm that the particular agreement and product scope apply to the contemplated workflow; do not generalize this restriction to all engines.
For each proposed use, trace the input to its source and owner. An internal prompt may combine studio-owned code, engine material, licensed assets, and personal data, each governed by different permissions. A provider’s no-training setting does not override a license restriction on submitting the material in the first place.

How should studios evaluate and govern a shared service?
Before procurement or rollout
- Inventory data and use cases. Record which studio and project own or control each input, how sensitive it is, and whether the task needs that data at all.
- Map data flows. Trace the user interface, orchestration layer, model provider, subprocessors, logs, retrieval stores, feedback channels, and output destinations. Identify cross-studio visibility at each point.
- Check controls and terms together. Review prompt and file retention, human review, training and feedback, subprocessors, data location, deletion, export, incident notice, termination, and available access controls. Match contract language to actual account settings.
- Check every rights layer. Review provider, engine, marketplace, and asset-license terms for the inputs and outputs involved. Escalate unclear rights rather than assuming a general AI permission covers them.
- Agree responsibilities in writing. Inter-studio and vendor agreements should address permitted purposes; ownership and reuse of prompts and outputs; retention and deletion; incident cooperation and breach notification; audit evidence; and offboarding.
During use
- Restrict access by studio, project, role, and data sensitivity where the service supports it; document exceptions and contractor access.
- Require human review of generated code and assets, with provenance and license checks appropriate to the output.
- Apply security review to generated code, especially where it is executed or used by an agent with access to systems or repositories.
- Escalate workflows involving personal data, confidential material, or high-impact decisions for legal, privacy, and security review.
- Maintain an inventory of systems and models, an approved-use policy, and a decision log so teams can identify what was authorized and under which terms.
NIST SP 800-218A, published July 26, 2024, supplements the Secure Software Development Framework with AI-specific practices for model producers, system producers, and acquirers. It includes practices such as recording security requirements, considering data-classification policies, and communicating requirements to third parties. It can inform secure development and procurement without replacing a studio’s own agreements or risk decisions.
Which risk frameworks and laws apply?
NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework is voluntary, not a certification or a fixed legal requirement. NIST released its Generative AI Profile on July 26, 2024, and its framework page notes that AI RMF 1.0 is being revised. Studios can use the framework to organize risk work, but should not present adoption as proof that a system is legally compliant or secure.
The European Commission published guidelines on the scope of general-purpose AI (GPAI) model provider obligations on July 18, 2025; the relevant obligations apply from August 2, 2025. The guidance addresses providers of general-purpose models. A studio that uses a provider’s model does not become a provider automatically: classification depends on what the studio does, including changes or distribution, and the applicable legal facts and jurisdiction. A specific studio’s obligations cannot be determined from the model’s presence in its workflow alone.
