Can MSI’s MAG B760M MORTAR MAX WIFI Overclock Intel Non‑K CPUs?

The MSI MAG B760M MORTAR MAX WIFI is the model MSI names for non‑K CPU overclocking via its OC Engine. The ordinary MORTAR’s CPU compatibility and memory-OC specifications do not prove the same feature.

Only the MSI MAG B760M MORTAR MAX WIFI is explicitly advertised by MSI as supporting non‑K CPU overclocking. The similarly named, ordinary MAG B760M MORTAR is an Intel B760 motherboard whose published specifications document processor compatibility and memory overclocking, but not the MAX model’s OC Engine. Check the exact suffix on the box and support page before treating the feature as available.

The model name changes the answer

MSI sells several closely named boards. Its statement about non‑K overclocking identifies the MAG B760M MORTAR MAX WIFI, not the ordinary MAG B760M MORTAR. MSI says the MAX WIFI has an onboard OC Engine that enables non‑K-series CPU overclocking, despite the usual B760 chipset limitation. That is a manufacturer capability claim, not an independently measured performance result or a guarantee for every processor and BIOS revision. MSI’s power-design article names the MAX WIFI and its OC Engine.

Board What MSI documents What is not established by the cited material
MAG B760M MORTAR Intel B760, LGA1700; support for Intel Core 14th-, 13th- and 12th-generation processors, plus Pentium Gold and Celeron models. The DDR5 specification lists four slots, up to 256 GB and memory speeds including tiers marked OC. No published OC Engine/non‑K CPU overclocking claim in the cited product material.
MAG B760M MORTAR MAX WIFI MSI’s article says an onboard OC Engine allows non‑K-series CPU overclocking; the article also describes a 12+1+1 power-phase design and associated cooling hardware. No quantified gain, complete CPU-by-CPU list, BIOS-by-BIOS guarantee or independent benchmark result.

See the ordinary MAG B760M MORTAR specification page and its product overview; neither should be read as documentation for the MAX WIFI’s OC Engine.

What MSI’s non‑K claim actually means

MSI’s wording is: “Even though the B760 chipset does not support overclocking, this model has an OC Engine built onto the motherboard that allows the non-K series CPU to overclock to its maximum frequency.” The surrounding text identifies “this model” as the MAG B760M MORTAR MAX WIFI. In other words, the board is advertised as adding a hardware and firmware path around the normal B760 restriction for eligible non‑K chips.

  • Lightning USB 20G: Built-in USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 port, offers 20Gbps transmission speed, 4X faster than USB 3.2 Gen 1

“Maximum frequency” should not be interpreted as a promised clock speed, fixed percentage increase or universal result. The available material does not identify every supported processor, required BIOS version, stepping behavior, voltage limit or achievable all-core frequency. Treat the feature as something to verify for your exact CPU and BIOS, not as a blanket compatibility guarantee.

Do not confuse memory overclocking with CPU overclocking

The ordinary DDR5 MORTAR specification lists JEDEC and higher memory tiers marked “OC,” up to 7200+ MHz depending on configuration. Those entries describe memory overclocking support. They do not show that the board can raise the multiplier or operating frequency of a non‑K processor. A system can support XMP or other memory profiles while leaving the CPU at stock settings.

How to evaluate a MAX WIFI build safely

  1. Confirm the exact board. Look for “MAX WIFI” in the complete model name. A product described only as “B760M MORTAR” is not evidence of the OC Engine claim.
  2. Check MSI’s current support page. Before buying or flashing, compare the CPU support list and BIOS notes for the exact board revision and processor.
  3. Update firmware using MSI’s documented method. Do not assume a BIOS feature mentioned in a marketing article exists in every older or newer release.
  4. Use conservative settings first. Record stock behavior, then change one CPU setting at a time while monitoring temperatures, voltage and stability. Keep a known-good BIOS profile so you can recover from failed training or instability.
  5. Validate the result. A successful boot is not proof of stability. Test the applications you actually use and watch for errors, throttling or excessive temperatures.

The cited sources do not provide a universal menu path or settings recipe, so the names and controls should be taken from the current BIOS for your board rather than copied from a different MSI model.

CEP is a separate firmware feature

MSI has also published a BIOS article about disabling Current Excursion Protection (CEP) for certain Intel processors and chipsets. That article illustrates why firmware controls can depend on both the CPU and the motherboard, but CEP control is not proof of non‑K overclocking. Do not use a CEP setting as a substitute for confirming OC Engine support. Read MSI’s CEP support article.

What remains unknown

  • MSI does not publish, in the cited material, a complete list of non‑K CPUs that will overclock through the OC Engine.
  • No independent benchmark or named study establishes a typical performance increase.
  • Behavior may change with BIOS release, CPU stepping, cooling, memory configuration and silicon quality.
  • The ordinary MORTAR, MORTAR WIFI and MAX WIFI are separate products; a regional listing or similar name does not prove identical firmware or hardware.

For a purchase or upgrade decision, use the exact board support page, current BIOS notes and your processor’s listing together. If those sources do not explicitly cover the combination, regard non‑K overclocking as unconfirmed.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: MSI’s documented non‑K CPU overclocking feature belongs to the MAG B760M MORTAR MAX WIFI and its OC Engine. The ordinary MAG B760M MORTAR’s CPU-support list and DDR5 memory-OC ratings do not establish the same capability. Verify the suffix, BIOS and exact CPU before building around the claim.
