Yes, in a limited and qualified sense. Meta says information you share with its AI can inform personalized replies, and that AI conversations may also shape content and ad recommendations in most regions. That means Meta’s systems may derive signals such as an interest in hiking from what you discuss. It does not prove that every inference is accurate, that Meta AI knows every detail about you, or that it can freely read unrelated private conversations.
What Meta AI can infer—and what that means
An explicit detail is something you state directly, such as “I’m vegan.” An inference is a conclusion drawn from context, such as interpreting repeated questions about plant-based meals as an interest or preference. Meta says information shared in AI chats may be retained and used to provide more personalized responses, and that its AI can pick up details from conversational context. Meta has also described using profile information and content a person likes or engages with to make replies more relevant. Meta’s September 2023 privacy explanation, updated November 21, 2025, describes these uses.

Can a conversation change the ads or posts you see?
Meta said AI interactions would be used to personalize content and ad recommendations beginning December 16, 2025, in most regions. For example, Meta says a conversation about hiking may signal an interest in hiking, much as liking a hiking-related Page might. That signal may affect the content and ads recommended to you. Meta’s October 2025 announcement describes the policy and its scope.

Meta says discussions of certain sensitive topics are not used to show ads. Its listed topics include religious views, sexual orientation, political views, health, racial or ethnic origin, philosophical beliefs, and trade union membership. This is Meta’s description of its advertising policy; it is not an independent audit of how recommendations operate.
Does Meta AI remember what you tell it?
Meta has described AI chat information being retained to personalize responses. In a January 2025 announcement, it said Meta AI could remember certain details in one-to-one WhatsApp and Messenger conversations, but not group chats, and that users could delete memories. That announcement describes the feature and rollout at that time, rather than establishing availability or behavior for every user today. See Meta’s January 2025 memory announcement.

Memory and recommendations are distinct uses: a remembered preference can help shape a later AI response, while a signal from an AI interaction may influence recommended content or ads. Meta also says information shared with AI features may be used to improve its products and for other purposes. Those statements should not be treated as interchangeable with a claim that every chat is used to train a model.

Meta says private messages between friends and family are not used to train its AIs unless someone in the conversation chooses to share those messages with an AI feature. That is a stated training exception, not a promise that AI interactions have no other uses: Meta separately describes personalization, recommendations, and product improvement.

Regional statements can differ. Meta’s Europe announcement said that EU users’ AI interactions and adults’ public posts and comments would be used to train and improve its models, and that people could object to the use of public data. Read those claims as applying to the region and circumstances Meta described, not as a universal rule for every account. Meta’s Europe announcement provides that regional context.
Can Meta AI read other messages in a group chat?
Meta’s September 2023 explanation said that, when invoked in WhatsApp, Instagram, or Messenger group chats, the assistant reads messages that mention “@Meta AI” or replies that invoke it, and does not access other messages in the chat. Because that statement is dated, it should be understood as Meta’s published explanation at that time—not a guarantee about every current product surface or later feature.

What controls and private-chat options are available?
Personalization and recommendations
Meta points users to Ads Preferences and feed controls to adjust ads and content recommendations. Meta also says information, including AI interactions, may be used across Meta Company Products when accounts are added to the same Accounts Center. Its example says an unlinked WhatsApp account’s AI interactions will not personalize experiences across other accounts. Account linkage therefore matters to cross-account personalization; it does not by itself establish every use of information within an account.

Deleting remembered details
Meta’s January 2025 memory announcement said users could delete stored memories. The precise controls and availability may vary by product and rollout, so check the relevant app’s current settings rather than assuming the same menu or feature is available to every account.
Incognito Chat
In May 2026, Meta announced Incognito Chat with Meta AI on WhatsApp and the Meta AI app. Meta described conversations in this mode as processed in a secure environment that Meta could not access, not saved, and set to disappear by default. The announcement said availability would roll out over the coming months; it does not establish that the option is available to every user or region. Check the app for access before relying on it. What the public claims do—and do not—establish
Meta reported that more than 1 billion people used Meta AI each month in its October 2025 announcement. That figure indicates reported reach, not how accurately personal details are inferred or how often an inference affects a recommendation. Meta’s published explanations describe intended uses, examples, and controls; they do not independently verify implementation or establish inference accuracy.
