Meta has announced preset AI transformations for short videos in the Meta AI app, on Meta.ai, and in Edits. For hands-on object selection, tracking, and layered compositions, Edits also has a separate Cutouts tool. These are related but different editing approaches.
Which Meta tool should you use?

Meta’s announcement does not establish the current country-by-country availability, limits, or price of generative video editing. Treat those details as launch-era information, not confirmed current terms.

How to apply a Meta AI video transformation
- Open a participating Meta surface: use the Meta AI app, Meta.ai website, or Edits app. Meta’s June 11, 2025 announcement described all three as upload destinations.
- Upload a short video: select a clip you want to transform.
- Choose a preset prompt: browse the available transformations and select one. Meta’s examples included graphic-novel or vintage-comic styling, altered lighting and mood, and a video-game-inspired look.
- Review the result and share it: Meta said edits made in the Meta AI app or Edits could be shared to Facebook and Instagram; the Meta AI app and website also offered sharing to the Discover feed.
At launch, Meta said there were more than 50 editing prompts and that users could transform 10 seconds of video for free for a limited time. Those were June 2025 launch details; Meta’s announcement does not confirm that the same prompt count, duration, or free allowance applies now. See Meta’s launch announcement.

Cutouts is for a more targeted edit than applying a preset style to an entire clip. Meta says the feature uses Segment Anything Model (SAM) 2.1 to isolate an object and track it through video. You can use the selected area in a layered composition, apply a filter to part of a video, or place text and stickers behind an object.

- Select the object: Edits can suggest objects automatically, or you can make positive and negative selection clicks to include or exclude areas.
- Generate the mask: the app creates a cutout of the selected object.
- Track and compose: the tool follows the object through the clip so you can arrange it with other layers and effects.
Meta’s May 2025 engineering article says the system is designed to keep the selection correct as an object moves, including when it leaves the frame, while running quickly enough for a real-time editing experience. Meta reported that Cutouts was used hundreds of thousands of times in the first 24 hours after Edits launched. It also reported a 1.8x throughput increase and a 3x reduction in end-to-end first-frame preview latency on an NVIDIA H100 GPU; those are engineering benchmarks on that GPU, not performance claims for a phone. What is available—and what is still a preview or research project?
Meta announced preset video editing as a product feature in June 2025. Edits’ Cutouts feature is also described as an app tool. By contrast, Movie Gen was presented as research in October 2024, including text-based edits that could add, remove, or replace elements and change a video’s background or style. Its research capabilities should not be mistaken for a generally available consumer editing app. See Meta’s Movie Gen overview.

In July 2026, Meta described Muse Video as a preview that was “coming soon to creators and Meta AI.” That announcement does not establish general availability. Meta also identified audio-video synchronization and physically accurate fast motion as areas where it was still working to improve results. See Meta’s Muse Video announcement.
What you need to get started
You need a compatible Meta app or the Meta.ai website and a video clip to upload. A smartphone tripod for video recording can help you capture steadier source footage, but it is optional and is not required for Meta’s editing tools. Meta’s reviewed announcements do not confirm current pricing or a current free-use allowance, so check the app or website for the terms shown to your account.
