Yes. Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) lets Linux distributions work with Windows files and network services, and WSL 2 can use some hardware capabilities. The details depend on where files are stored, which WSL networking mode is configured, and whether a device has a supported passthrough or mount workflow. WSL is not the same as giving Linux unrestricted, direct access to every Windows device.
Accessing files in both directions
Linux commands can read and write files on Windows drives. The C: drive is commonly available at /mnt/c, so a Windows Documents folder might appear as /mnt/c/Users/<user>/Documents. This Windows-drive integration uses DrvFS. For a Linux-first project, Microsoft recommends keeping the working files in the Linux filesystem; for a Windows-first project, keeping them on the Windows filesystem is usually more suitable. The choice can affect performance when tools work across the two filesystems. See Microsoft’s guide to working across file systems.

Windows applications can also reach files in a Linux distribution using the network path \wsl$ or \wsl.localhost. This makes it possible to open Linux-side files from Windows without relocating the project.
Expect filesystem differences
- Windows is generally case-insensitive, while Linux is case-sensitive. A project that works on one side may encounter differently named files or paths on the other.
- File permissions do not map perfectly between the operating systems. WSL permissions may reflect Windows permissions or WSL metadata, depending on configuration; Windows-side access to Linux files uses the distribution’s default user.
Network access depends on direction and mode
WSL networking usually works, but the route between Windows and Linux depends on the configured network mode. NAT is the default. In that mode, Windows applications can ordinarily reach a service running in WSL through localhost. A Linux process connecting to a service running on Windows may instead need the Windows host’s IP address.

Mirrored networking on Windows 11
Windows 11 version 22H2 and later supports mirrored networking as an option configured through .wslconfig. Microsoft lists Windows-to-WSL and WSL-to-Windows localhost connectivity, IPv6, multicast, direct LAN access to WSL, and improved VPN compatibility among its benefits. Mirrored mode changes connectivity behavior; it does not remove firewall controls. Inbound connections can still be blocked by Windows or other firewall rules. See Microsoft’s WSL networking guidance for setup details and current conditions.
Windows 11 version 22H2 and later also enables DNS tunneling by default. The auto-proxy option can pass Windows proxy settings into WSL when configured. If a connection fails, check the WSL mode, connection direction, VPN, proxy, DNS, and firewall rather than assuming Linux networking is unavailable.

Hardware access: supported paths, not universal access
WSL 2 supports GPU access. Microsoft’s WSL FAQ says, “We have released support for accessing the GPU inside of WSL 2 distributions!” GPU calls use Windows GPU integration, so support for WSL 2 does not guarantee that every GPU model, driver, application, or workload will work. Consult the Microsoft WSL FAQ and the requirements for the particular workload.

USB passthrough is available through the separate, open-source usbipd-win project. It is an additional setup, not automatic access to every USB device. Microsoft’s examples include flashing an Arduino and using a smartcard reader. When a USB device is attached to WSL, Windows cannot use it until it is detached. The current Microsoft USB connection guide covers prerequisites, supported host architecture, and attachment steps.

Serial ports and disks have distinct limits
Microsoft’s WSL version comparison lists serial-port access as unsupported in WSL 2. If a workflow depends on a serial port, check whether WSL 1 or a different environment is appropriate before committing to WSL 2.
WSL 2 can mount Linux-formatted disks under documented conditions using wsl --mount. This requires administrator access and cannot be used to mount the active Windows installation disk. The command also does not support USB flash drives, USB disks, or SD-card readers. For prerequisites and the supported disk workflow, see Microsoft’s Linux disk mounting guide.

Choosing between WSL 1 and WSL 2
WSL 2 uses virtualization and a Linux kernel; WSL 1 uses a different architecture. Microsoft generally recommends WSL 2, but the best fit depends on the workflow, especially where project files live and which hardware access is required.
| Need | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Linux tools doing most work on Linux-side project files | WSL 2 is the general recommendation; keep the working tree in the Linux filesystem for the best performance. |
| Tools frequently operating across Windows and Linux filesystems | Compare the filesystem behavior and performance for the project. Microsoft identifies cross-filesystem work as a consideration when choosing between WSL versions. |
| GPU or USB access from Linux | Use WSL 2 for documented GPU support; USB requires the separate usbipd-win workflow and a supported device and setup. |
| Serial-port-dependent workflow | Serial-port access is listed as unsupported in WSL 2; investigate WSL 1 or another environment. |
For Microsoft’s full technical comparison, see Comparing WSL versions. Specific device, distribution, VPN, firewall, disk, and GPU workload compatibility can vary, so check the current instructions for the exact configuration you plan to use.
