Google Family Link vs. Apple Screen Time: Which Parental Controls Fit Your Family?

The right choice depends first on your child’s devices. Google Family Link supervises a child’s Google Account and supported Android devices and Chromebooks; most of its supervision tools do not work on iPhone, iPad, or an ordinary computer. Apple Screen Time is managed through Family Sharing and a child account, with controls that depend on Apple devices and compatible software. Neither is a universal cross-platform control system.

At a glance: compare device coverage first

What you want to manage Google Family Link Apple Screen Time
Accounts and devices A child’s Google Account on supported Android devices and Chromebooks; Google services. Google’s device guidance says most Family Link tools cannot supervise iPhones, iPads, or computers other than Chromebooks. A child account and Apple devices managed through Family Sharing. Apple’s updated parental-control experience requires family devices to run iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, or visionOS 27; families unable to update all devices can keep using the previous experience or adjust controls on the child’s device, according to Apple’s setup guidance published September 14, 2026.
Time limits Daily device limits, per-app limits, Downtime and School time schedules, plus bonus time and unlimited-app options. System apps cannot be given app limits. Time Allowances for categories, app or category limits, schedules, pausing, and always-allowed selections. Blocking behavior depends on the applicable Screen Time setting.
Apps and purchases Approve or block Google Play apps, set maturity restrictions, and approve purchases made through Google Play billing. Manage apps and websites and use eligible download or purchase requests, including Ask to Buy.
Web and content Chrome site allow/block rules, an approved-sites-only option, explicit-site filtering, and Google Play content ratings. Website and app access controls, Ask to Browse, media ratings, and content and privacy restrictions.
Location and activity Parents can check the location of supervised Android devices and documented app activity on Android or Chromebook. Chromebook location reporting is unavailable. Family Sharing supports location sharing and finding family devices. Apple’s Screen Time guidance focuses on usage and restrictions rather than providing a directly comparable location feature.
Communication and safety Google documents account, app, and web supervision. The cited guidance does not establish a directly equivalent system-wide contact and sensitive-media feature. For supported communications, parents can choose who a child may contact. Communication Safety detects certain sensitive media on-device and offers guidance.
Privacy statements Google explains what supervising parents can manage and see for supervised accounts. Apple says Communication Safety checks media on-device and that Apple does not get access to the photos or videos it checks. This statement is specific to that feature.

These are different platform scopes, not interchangeable products. The table describes vendor-documented capabilities, not independent testing; the details can vary by operating-system release, account age, and region.

What you need to set up each system

Google Family Link

A parent needs a Google Account and the child needs a Google Account. Google’s Family Link setup guide lists requirements for the parent app and the child’s supervised device. Age thresholds for Google accounts depend on the country. Check the current local eligibility and device requirements before setup.

Signing a child into Google on an iPhone, iPad, or regular computer does not bring the full Family Link experience to that device. Google says most supervision tools do not work there. A child who uses more than one kind of device may therefore receive different coverage on each one.

Apple Screen Time

Family-managed controls require Family Sharing and a child’s own Apple account. Apple notes that not every control exists on every device. Its updated experience requires compatible software across the family group; if some devices cannot be updated, Apple says families can continue with the previous experience or make adjustments directly on the child’s device. Some protections or defaults vary by age and jurisdiction, including state, country, or region.

Time limits, downtime, and app allowances

Family Link: device schedules and app limits

Family Link separates daily device limits from per-app limits and schedules. Its schedule controls include Downtime and School time, and parents can grant bonus time or mark apps as unlimited. Google’s app-limit guidance says app limits require Android 7 or later or ChromeOS 83 or later in the applicable contexts; system apps cannot be limited this way. Google’s schedule guidance lists Android 7 or later for schedules.

Screen Time: allowances, schedules, and always-allowed items

Apple Screen Time organizes limits as Time Allowances, app or category limits, and schedules. Parents can also choose always-allowed apps and contacts. Apple’s schedule instructions describe a setting that blocks use during scheduled downtime; without blocking enabled, a child may be able to ignore a limit. The exact options depend on the device and software version, so check the child’s Screen Time settings rather than assuming a schedule blocks every app by default.

Apps, purchases, websites, and content filters

Family Link controls Google Play and Chrome contexts

Parents can approve or block apps in Google Play, apply maturity restrictions, and manage purchase approval. Those purchase approvals apply to Google Play billing, not purchases made outside that system. See Google’s Google Play app controls.

For Chrome, Family Link can use website allow/block rules, including an approved-sites-only option, and an explicit-site filter. Google cautions that “No filter is perfect, but this should help hide sexually explicit sites.” The filter should not be treated as a guarantee or as a filter for every browser, app, or service. Google’s Chrome and child-account guidance describes the relevant scope.

Screen Time controls Apple app, web, and media access

Apple’s controls include app and website access rules, Ask to Browse, media ratings, and content and privacy restrictions. These settings apply within Apple’s supported controls; they do not establish that every third-party app or service is filtered in the same way. Apple’s Screen Time management guide and parental-controls overview explain the available options.

Communication, safety, location, and activity

Apple documents contact restrictions and Communication Safety

Apple lets parents choose who a child may communicate with in supported apps. Communication Safety detects certain sensitive images or videos on-device and provides guidance. Apple states that “Apple doesn’t get access to the photos or videos” checked by this feature. That is a description of Communication Safety processing, not a statement about Apple’s overall data practices.

Family Link shows eligible device location and activity

Google says parents can check the location of supervised Android devices. It does not provide Chromebook location reporting. Google also documents app activity for Android and Chromebook in applicable contexts. These functions should not be confused with a guarantee that a child’s location or activity is visible from every device.

Apple Family Sharing includes location sharing and finding family devices, while the Screen Time materials focus on usage and restrictions. The available guidance does not support a feature-by-feature comparison of location accuracy. Google’s cited materials describe account, app, and web controls but do not establish a system-wide feature equivalent to Apple’s documented contact restrictions and Communication Safety; that distinction is limited to these documented capabilities, not proof that no other relevant Google service controls exist.

Which one should you choose?

  • Choose Family Link when: your child primarily uses a supported Android device or Chromebook, and you want Google Account supervision, Google Play and Chrome controls, time limits, or eligible Android location reporting.
  • Choose Screen Time when: your family manages the child’s Apple devices through Family Sharing and needs Apple’s schedules, app and content restrictions, communication controls, or Communication Safety.
  • For a mixed-device household: map every device and the apps or browsers your child actually uses. A platform’s built-in controls may cover only part of that use. Do not assume Family Link supervises an iPhone or that Apple Screen Time applies to an Android device.

Neither system is a universal winner: the documented feature sets cover different accounts and devices. For either one, verify software compatibility, local age rules, and the settings available on the child’s specific device.
