That describes chain construction, not a finished protein ready for use: purification and folding came afterward, and the work demonstrated laboratory research capability rather than commercial-scale production.
What the 2020 study demonstrated
Hartrampf and colleagues reported a chemical protein-synthesis method combining optimized peptide chemistry with an automated fast-flow instrument. In their 2020 Science paper, the team reported making chains as long as 164 amino acids, completing elongation in hours, and demonstrating the method on nine different protein chains. The paper also described direct chain manufacturing over 327 consecutive reactions. These are results from that study and protocol, not general performance guarantees for every peptide or instrument. Build the chain on a solid support
In solid-phase peptide synthesis, the growing chain is attached to a polymer resin. The instrument carries out repeated chemical steps that add amino acids one at a time. This is different from ribosomal protein synthesis inside cells: the reported advance was an automated chemical process, not a faster biological translation system.

The reported system automated the sequence of reactions in a flow reactor. The contemporary account describes heating the reaction to 90°C as important because it helped limit aggregation of the growing polypeptide on the solid support. Long sequences are challenging partly because a chain can aggregate or become difficult to extend as it grows. How long did it take—and what does “hours” mean?
The study describes peptide-chain elongation as taking hours but does not establish one exact duration that applies to all targets. Chemistry World reported an estimate from study researcher Azin Saebi of about four hours for a 110-amino-acid barnase chain. It also reported a rate of about 2.5 minutes per amino-acid addition. Those figures describe the reported method and example; they should not be treated as a universal cycle time or as a like-for-like comparison with the total time required to produce a protein biologically.
Most importantly, chain elongation is only one part of the workflow. The MIT repository record says the synthetic materials showed biophysical and enzymatic properties comparable to biological expression products after purification and folding. What chemical synthesis can offer that cell-based production may not
A potential advantage of chemical synthesis is the ability to use noncanonical amino-acid building blocks. Biological expression depends on cellular translation machinery and the available genetic-code methods, so installing unusual residues can be constrained. That does not mean every unusual amino acid is easy to incorporate chemically, or that chemical synthesis is the better choice for every sequence.
The 164-amino-acid result is a demonstrated capability for this particular protocol, not a universal maximum for chemical synthesis. Sequence, chemistry, equipment, and the intended output all affect what is practical.

Why the result was not yet a manufacturing revolution
The 2020 study demonstrated that long-chain chemical synthesis could be accelerated under the demonstrated conditions. It did not establish low overall cost, commercial-scale output, or that a finished product could be manufactured in hours. The contemporaneous report described laboratory-research quantities and identified scale-up and expense as challenges. Study researcher Bradley L. Pentelute put the distinction plainly: “We make enough for research in the laboratory, but if we wanted to make a commercial product, we would have to figure out how to scale the chemistry so that we can make much larger amounts, like gram quantities.”
Accordingly, the result is best understood as a significant laboratory demonstration: faster chemical chain elongation, with potential value for research targets that are difficult to make biologically. The evidence cited here documents the 2020 study; it does not establish current instrument availability, later performance records, or whether this remains the field’s leading result.
