Apple’s iPhone Duo has a 7.6-inch inner display and new multitasking features, but Apple describes it as a foldable iPhone, not an iPad mini replacement. The open screen is smaller than the iPad mini’s 8.3-inch display, and Apple’s product materials don’t establish how comfortable it is for long reading sessions or every tablet workflow.
What Apple says the iPhone Duo is—and isn’t
Apple calls iPhone Duo its first foldable iPhone and presents its large display, portability, content viewing, gaming, and multitasking as key features. Its announcement does not call the device a tablet or say it replaces an iPad. So “replacement” is a question for buyers to answer based on their own use, not Apple’s stated product category. Apple’s announcement and product page frame it as a phone that opens to a larger display.

Apple CEO John Ternus described it as “the largest display ever on iPhone that still fits easily in your pocket,” highlighting content, multitasking, and gaming. That is product positioning, not a direct claim about replacing an iPad.
How the open display compares with iPad mini
Apple lists iPhone Duo’s inner display at 7.6 inches and its outer display at 5.4 inches. The current iPad mini has an 8.3-inch display, according to Apple’s technical specifications. The Duo’s open display is therefore smaller, although its folding design gives you a phone and a larger viewing area in one device.

The iPad mini weighs 293 grams for the Wi-Fi model or 297 grams for Wi-Fi + Cellular. Apple’s cited Duo materials do not provide a weight, so there is no supported weight comparison here. A foldable phone may reduce the number of devices you carry, but the screen measurements alone cannot establish which device feels easier to use for reading, watching video, or typing.
Which tablet tasks Duo may cover
Browsing and watching content
The 7.6-inch inner display is larger than Duo’s own 5.4-inch outer display and can make reading web pages or viewing video more comfortable than using the phone screen alone. That makes casual browsing and content viewing plausible small-tablet uses. Apple’s published specifications do not establish whether the Duo is as comfortable as an iPad mini for extended sessions.

Using two apps at once
Apple says iOS 27 on Duo supports Split View, which opens two apps side by side. It also describes opening two windows of the same app, such as Safari, switching quickly between apps, and saving app pairs. These features could suit light two-app tasks such as checking a reference while writing a note or keeping a webpage beside a message.
Those examples don’t establish that every iPad app or workflow will work the same way on Duo. If your tablet use depends on a particular app or arrangement, check that app’s support and behavior rather than assuming the iPhone feature set will match the iPad’s.

Notes, drawing, and document markup
Apple says Duo will support Apple Pencil (USB-C) later in 2026 for notes, sketching, and document markup. That is a future availability statement, not confirmation that Pencil support is available now. Check Apple’s current product information before relying on it.
The current iPad mini specifications list support for Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C). If stylus work is central to your tablet use, the iPad mini has the more clearly established Pencil workflow in Apple’s published specifications.

When keeping a separate iPad mini makes more sense
- You prefer the iPad mini’s larger 8.3-inch display for reading, video, or working with documents.
- You rely on an established Apple Pencil workflow or need Pencil support before Duo’s announced later-2026 availability.
- Your work depends on an iPad app, layout, or multitasking behavior that Apple has not demonstrated for Duo.
- You want to assess comfort for long sessions in person rather than infer it from screen size and product descriptions.
One device or two: the cost and flexibility trade-off
Apple lists a U.S. starting price of $1,999 for iPhone Duo. Preorders begin October 16, 2026, with availability beginning October 23 in the initial markets, according to Apple’s announcement. Those dates and price are Apple’s stated U.S. launch details, not a universal price or availability promise for every region.

Which arrangement is better depends on whether carrying one device matters more to you than those tablet-specific advantages; the starting price alone does not establish the total cost of replacing an existing setup.

How to decide for your own use
- List the tasks you use a small tablet for. Separate content and browsing from stylus work, long reading, and app-specific workflows.
- Check whether Duo’s features cover those tasks. Apple documents Split View, same-app windows, app switching, and saved app pairs; confirm support for the apps you depend on.
- Verify Pencil availability if you need it. Apple announced Apple Pencil (USB-C) support for Duo later in 2026, so confirm it has shipped before making that a deciding feature.
- Compare the devices in person if comfort matters. Apple’s stated display sizes show the iPad mini is larger, but do not answer how either device will feel for your reading, video, or typing habits.
