Sometimes—but there is no single isopropyl alcohol (IPA) rule for every PC. Use it only on surfaces and devices whose manufacturer permits it, following the exact model’s instructions. Shut down and unplug the device, apply the permitted solution to a soft lint-free cloth rather than directly to the computer, keep the cloth lightly damp, and let the surface dry before reconnecting or powering on. Guidance for exterior surfaces does not establish that IPA is safe for motherboards or other internal components.
Why the answer depends on the device and surface
PC makers give different instructions for cases, screens, keyboards, and other accessories. Even within one brand, coatings and finishes can change what is safe. Concentrations are manufacturer recommendations for specific products—not a universal cleaning formula or proof that the same method is suitable for every computer.

For example, Dell and HP specify a 70% IPA and 30% water mixture for covered devices, subject to HP’s stated exceptions. Lenovo’s display guidance describes a 50/50 IPA-and-water mixture for a remaining stain after dry wiping. Apple recommends water for routine MacBook screen cleaning and permits 70% IPA on a cloth for certain hard-to-remove smudges. Microsoft allows up to 70% IPA on a cloth for specified Surface touchscreen care. Follow the relevant product instructions rather than choosing a concentration from this list.

How to clean an approved PC surface with IPA
- Check the exact product instructions. Identify the model and surface, including any special coating or finish. Use IPA only if the manufacturer permits it for that surface.
- Shut down and disconnect. Unplug AC power and other connections. Remove batteries from wireless keyboards or mice when applicable.
- Dampen a cloth, not the device. Use a soft lint-free microfiber cloth and the concentration specified by the manufacturer. Do not spray or pour liquid onto the computer.
- Wipe gently. Avoid hard or repeated rubbing. Keep liquid away from seams, ports, openings, keys, and display edges; do not let the cloth drip.
- Let the surface dry fully. For Dell-covered devices, Dell says no visible moisture should remain before restoring power. Do not reconnect or turn the device on while the cleaned surface is wet.
What to do about screens, keyboards, and loose dust
Screens
Do not assume that a screen can be cleaned the same way as a case. Apple’s routine MacBook screen method is a water-dampened cloth, while its IPA allowance is for certain hard-to-remove marks. Microsoft’s Surface instructions have their own limits. HP also says not to spray or pour liquid directly on an LCD. Use only the procedure listed for the exact screen and model.

Keyboards and gaps
For a keyboard whose maker permits IPA, apply it to a cloth and keep moisture out of the key gaps. For loose debris in gaps or vents, use the device maker’s dust-removal advice; HP and Microsoft mention canned compressed air for relevant debris. Do not use liquid as a substitute for removing loose dust.
Can you use IPA on a motherboard or internal components?
The manufacturer pages cited here do not provide broad permission to clean motherboards or installed internal assemblies with IPA. Their instructions concern exterior surfaces, screens, keyboards, and peripherals; they are not evidence of internal-component compatibility. Consult the exact component manufacturer or service documentation before cleaning inside a PC, and do not power equipment until any manufacturer-authorized method is fully dry.

Safety and common mistakes
- Do not apply IPA to every surface by default. A coating or painted finish may be incompatible; HP identifies anti-fingerprint-coated PCs and a specific Victus bezel as exceptions.
- Do not spray or pour cleaner on the computer. Liquid can enter openings or collect around keys and screen edges.
- Do not clean a powered or plugged-in device. Disconnect it first and remove peripheral batteries where the instructions call for it.
- Keep IPA away from flames. HP and Lenovo warn that IPA is flammable; Lenovo says not to use it near an exposed flame.
- Do not scrub hard or repeatedly. Excessive rubbing can harm a finish or screen surface.
