Yes. Hardware can expose data through an inline keylogger, an untrusted USB connection, compromised firmware, or a card skimmer. The practical response is to control physical access and use trusted connections—not to assume every unusual malware symptom points to a sophisticated firmware attack.
How can hardware put your information at risk?
Software security tools protect against many digital threats, but they cannot necessarily detect a separate device inserted between your computer and keyboard, or make an unfamiliar USB port trustworthy. Physical access is central to several of the risks below. Leo A. Notenboom’s 2017 article describes hardware keyloggers as rare, but offers no measured prevalence estimate. Ask Leo!’s overview of hardware threats is useful context, not evidence of a current incident rate.

Can a hardware keylogger steal passwords?
Yes. A small device placed between a keyboard and computer can record keystrokes before they reach the computer. Because the logger is separate hardware, anti-malware software running on the computer may not see it. Installing one requires physical access to the equipment; the 2017 Ask Leo! article characterizes such devices as rare.
- Avoid entering passwords or other sensitive information on public computers.
- Keep your own computer and its connected equipment where untrusted people cannot access them.
- If you notice an unfamiliar adapter or device between the keyboard and computer, disconnect it and use a trusted setup.
Is it safe to charge a phone at a public USB station?
A USB connection can carry both power and data. If you connect a phone to a computer or charging station you do not control, software on the connected computer may interact with the phone unexpectedly. CISA advises travelers to avoid connecting devices to unfamiliar computers or charging stations. CISA’s travel-device advice explains the precaution.

That possibility should not be confused with proof that “juice-jacking” is a widespread, confirmed attack. In a 2023 discussion, CISA said the reports it reviewed did not cite evidence and that it was not aware of confirmed cases. CISA Senior Technical Advisor Bob Lord put the distinction this way: “There is a difference between attacks that are possible, those that are probable, and those for which we have evidence of active exploitation.” CISA’s 2023 explanation does not establish an incident count or prevalence rate.
Choose a charging connection you can trust
| Option | Control of power source | Data connection | Convenience |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personal wall charger and cable at a trusted outlet | You choose the charger and use a trusted outlet. | Charging from the wall does not require connecting the phone to a public computer or station. | Straightforward when a suitable outlet is available. |
| USB data blocker with an unfamiliar USB power source | The USB power source remains unfamiliar and outside your control. | A data blocker is intended to prevent data transfer while allowing charging; no particular model is established here. | A fallback when a wall charger and trusted outlet are not practical. |
A personal wall charger connected to a trusted outlet is the simpler choice. If you must use an unfamiliar USB power source, a data blocker is a reasonable precaution; it does not make the source itself trusted.

Can malware survive a clean reinstall in the BIOS or UEFI?
Firmware-level compromise is technically possible. Because BIOS or UEFI firmware runs beneath the operating system, malware established there can potentially persist through an operating-system reinstall. CISA’s 2023 alert referenced Microsoft guidance for investigating the BlackLotus UEFI bootkit, demonstrating a specific case—not that firmware infection is a common explanation for recurring malware. CISA’s BlackLotus alert describes that guidance.
If malware returns after a reinstall, first consider the more ordinary explanation identified by Ask Leo!: the same malicious software may have been installed again, for example from a restored backup or a downloaded program. A returning symptom alone does not establish a firmware infection. Do not re-flash firmware speculatively; the Ask Leo! article discusses re-flashing only as a remedy when infection has actually been established.

How can you reduce the risk of card skimmers?
A skimmer is a device placed on or inside a payment-card terminal or cash machine to capture card data. A nearby hidden camera or other method may also capture a PIN. Prefer familiar, trusted terminals when practical, and pay attention to equipment that looks loose, damaged, or out of place.
Ask Leo! relays security researcher Brian Krebs’s practice of tugging on a card slot to check it. Treat that as an anecdotal check, not a reliable inspection: a skimmer may not be detectable by touch, and checking one part of a terminal cannot rule out every way card data or a PIN might be captured. The source offers no measured estimate of how often these devices are encountered.

What should you remember about hardware threats?
Physical control is the practical thread connecting these risks: protect access to your computer, avoid connecting a phone to USB equipment you do not control, and use familiar payment terminals when possible. Keep the likelihood in proportion. A hardware attack can be possible without being established as widespread, and a recurring malware problem does not by itself prove a BIOS or UEFI compromise.
