A QR code can lead to a phishing site if someone replaces the code, sends a malicious one, or later takes control of a domain or redirect service that a legitimate code still uses. The first two are established QR-scam techniques; a takeover involving an abandoned branded QR domain is a more specific, recently reported risk that has not been independently confirmed for the vendor named in the report.
How a QR code can send you to a phishing site
A QR code is a container for data, often a web address. Its printed pattern does not prove that the address is safe, or that the organization that originally used it still controls the destination. There are three distinct ways a scan can lead somewhere deceptive:

The FBI/IC3 warns that criminals tamper with both physical and digital QR codes, and that a malicious domain can resemble the expected one through a typo or misplaced letter. The FTC also describes QR scams delivered through unexpected messages and urgent account or delivery lures. Singapore’s joint police and cybersecurity advisory describes QR swaps that redirect payments to an attacker. Some printed QR codes do not encode a final destination directly. They may point first to a branded domain, a subdomain, or a QR service that redirects the visitor. If the organization stops maintaining one of those links but leaves the code in circulation, the path can outlive the original service.

Abandoned subdomains and SaaS services
CYFIRMA’s March 2026 security report describes a general abandoned-infrastructure risk: a DNS record can continue pointing a subdomain to a third-party service after the organization stops using that service. If the provider allows someone else to claim the unassigned custom domain, that person may be able to serve content through the organization’s old-looking subdomain. This depends on the provider and its controls; it is not an automatic consequence of every abandoned DNS record. CYFIRMA report on abandoned infrastructure.
Expired domains and old printed codes
If an organization lets a domain expire while live QR codes still point to it, a new registrant may receive the traffic. Likewise, a redirect endpoint may change where it sends visitors. The original QR code need not be altered for its destination to change: the encoded address can remain the same while control of the domain or the redirect behind it changes.

Late-September 2026 reporting raised a QR-vendor-specific version of this risk involving QR TIGER’s custom-domain feature. The report described a researcher’s claim that a previously printed branded code could be redirected to an attacker-selected site. Because the underlying technical disclosure could not be reviewed, this remains a reported claim—not an independently verified finding about QR TIGER’s current product or QR services generally. iTnews, Mirage Threat Watcher.

- Read the complete destination first. Use your phone camera or a trusted QR reader to preview the address before opening it. Check the actual domain name, not just a familiar brand name elsewhere in the URL. Misspellings, extra characters, or an unfamiliar host are reasons to stop. The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security cautions that unknown third-party scanner apps can introduce privacy or malware risks. Canadian Centre for Cyber Security guidance.
- Verify unexpected requests independently. If a QR code arrives in an unexpected text or email, do not scan it under pressure. Visit the organization’s known website yourself or call a number you already trust; do not rely on contact details in the suspicious message.
- Check public codes for tampering. If a code on a parking meter, payment notice, or display looks like a sticker placed over another code or otherwise altered, ask the organization to verify it before scanning.
- Confirm payments and sign-ins through a trusted route. Do not enter credentials or payment details on a page reached through a suspicious code. For a payment, confirm the recipient and amount in the trusted payment app or with the organization.
- Stop if the destination does not make sense. A scan alone is not the same as entering credentials, paying, or installing software. If a page seems suspicious, close it and do not continue with its prompts.
What organizations should do about QR codes still in circulation
Long-lived printed materials create a lifecycle problem: the code may remain in use after a campaign, domain, or vendor relationship has ended. Organizations can reduce that risk by treating QR destinations as part of their infrastructure inventory, not as disposable artwork.

- Track active QR codes alongside their encoded URLs, redirect services, branded domains, DNS records, and owners.
- Keep control of domains and custom subdomains printed on materials for as long as those materials are expected to remain usable, or deliberately retire the codes and their DNS references.
- When offboarding a QR platform or SaaS provider, remove obsolete CNAME records and custom-domain associations rather than leaving them pointed at an unclaimed endpoint.
- Test destinations and redirect chains periodically, and after vendor, DNS, or domain changes.
- For high-risk payment and login flows, use organization-controlled, monitored domains; include domain ownership, renewal, and planned retirement in decommissioning checklists.
These practices address abandoned-domain and redirect risks, but they do not prevent every kind of QR fraud. CYFIRMA notes that DNSSEC does not stop an attacker from claiming an endpoint that a valid DNS record already points to. HTTPS likewise does not establish that the organization still controls the content reached through a valid domain. CYFIRMA’s technical discussion.

“QR code domain hijacking” can refer to control of an abandoned domain, a dangling SaaS subdomain, or a redirect service used by a code. It is not the same as replacing a printed sticker, sending a malicious code in a message, QR Login account hijacking (sometimes called QRLJacking), or DNS cache poisoning. The distinction matters because the defense differs: users should inspect and verify destinations, while issuers must also manage domain, DNS, redirect, and vendor lifecycles.
