Usually, yes—but only when the battery and tool belong to the same Greenworks voltage platform, and the exact models allow it. Greenworks says batteries are interchangeable only with tools on the same platform; being the same brand is not enough to establish compatibility.
Start by matching the voltage platform
Greenworks sells separate 24V, 40V, 60V, and 80V tool and battery platforms. Its rule is that a battery can be used only with tools on the same voltage platform. For example, a compatible Greenworks 40V battery may work in another eligible Greenworks 40V tool. A 24V or 80V battery is not suitable for a 40V tool. Greenworks states this rule in its official battery FAQ and battery collection.

Greenworks puts it plainly: “Our batteries are interchangeable with tools that are of the same voltage platform only.” Treat a different voltage as a stop sign; do not try to make a mismatched pack work.
What to check before swapping or buying a battery
- Read the voltage on the battery. Note whether it is 24V, 40V, 60V, or 80V.
- Check the tool’s specified platform. Find the voltage on the tool’s product listing or in its owner’s manual. It must match the battery platform.
- Compare the exact model numbers. Check the battery and tool listings or manuals for model-specific compatibility restrictions; a matching voltage alone is not a guarantee.
- Confirm the battery fits correctly. Do not force a pack that does not seat as intended.
- Check the charger separately. Use a charger designated for that voltage platform.

Does a higher Ah battery work in the same tool?
Amp-hours (Ah) describe battery capacity and help indicate runtime; Greenworks says a higher Ah rating offers more runtime. Ah does not make a battery compatible across voltage platforms. The battery still has to match the tool’s voltage and comply with any model-specific restrictions.
Greenworks notes an exception for some older 80V snow throwers: models 2600402, 2605202, and 2601302 manufactured before September 2017 can use only 2.0Ah or 2.5Ah battery models. That restriction is listed in the Greenworks battery collection.

Why checking the exact model matters
Greenworks identifies restrictions for its 60V 8.0Ah battery, model 2957102, but its official pages do not give the same list of excluded tools. The battery collection names 60V 12-inch snow shovels, 22-inch snow blowers, tillers/cultivators, and lawn mowers as incompatible. A separate batteries-and-chargers FAQ instead names dual-port lawn mowers, pressure washers, and wet/dry vacuums.

Chargers must match the platform too
Greenworks assigns chargers to voltage platforms. Its FAQ says designated chargers handle batteries on their platform regardless of Ah rating; that does not mean a charger works across every Greenworks voltage line. Check the charger and battery specifications together rather than assuming a charger from another platform will work.

For an eligible 40V tool, a Greenworks 40V battery is a possible replacement or additional pack—but confirm the tool’s exact model before ordering. Compare options using these checks:

- Ah rating: Affects capacity and expected runtime, not cross-platform compatibility.
- Model restrictions and fit: Confirm the exact battery and tool combination in current documentation.
- Charger: Use a charger designated for the same voltage platform.
For example, you can check the Greenworks 40V 2.5Ah battery listing as an option for a compatible 40V tool, but verify the tool model’s compatibility before purchase.
