GIMP can replace Photoshop for many everyday image-editing tasks, but it is not a universal substitute. For a broad desktop photo workflow, Affinity by Canva is the strongest fit among the options covered here: its listed tools include RAW development, retouching, HDR, batch processing, and non-destructive editing. If browser access and PSD files matter most, Photopea is the more direct option. Whichever you choose, test it with your own files before switching.
When GIMP is enough—and when it is not
GIMP is a free, open-source, cross-platform image editor for GNU/Linux, macOS, Windows, and other systems. The project describes it as suitable for image manipulation, original artwork, design elements, color management, scripting, and third-party plug-ins. For routine edits and compositing, it may cover everything you need without a subscription. The project’s homepage lists GIMP 3.2.6, released September 10, 2026. GIMP project

“Replace Photoshop” is a workflow question, not a simple feature-count contest. A switch is more complicated if your work depends on Photoshop-specific documents, specialized features, or an Adobe workflow. Feature overlap does not guarantee identical behavior, file fidelity, or results.

Why Affinity is the broadest desktop alternative here
Affinity is the strongest feature-based fit for someone seeking a single desktop photo editor with capabilities beyond basic image manipulation. Its official page lists RAW development, retouching, HDR, focus stacking, batch processing, macros, unlimited layers, and non-destructive editing. This is a recommendation based on documented features, not a claim that it is a one-for-one Photoshop clone or a hands-on performance comparison. Affinity photo-editing page

Check the PSD details before moving projects
Affinity says it imports layered PSD files and retains masks, groups, and adjustments in most cases. Its FAQ cautions that smart objects and advanced filters may flatten. That can change how a file behaves when you continue editing it, so inspect the layers and effects in an actual project rather than assuming the import is fully editable. Account and AI terms
Affinity currently describes individual access as free with a Canva account. It says Canva AI tools require a Canva premium plan; that requirement concerns those AI tools, not the stated free access to the individual app. Verify current access terms before installing because product terms can change. When Photopea is the better choice
Choose Photopea when you want to edit in a browser or need a convenient way to open and save PSD files. Its product page advertises layers, masks, smart objects, adjustment layers, channels, paths, and RAW formats including DNG, CR2, CR3, NEF, ARW, RW2, RAF, ORF, and FFF. Photopea says it runs on your device and does not upload files. These are the vendor’s descriptions, not an independent guarantee that every Photoshop document will render or save identically. What to verify before switching
Test with a project that represents your real work. A successful import alone does not prove that your normal editing and delivery process will work as expected.
Rank #3
- Open a representative layered PSD, if PSD handoff is part of your workflow.
- Inspect masks, groups, text, adjustment layers, smart objects, and effects for missing, flattened, or altered elements.
- Perform a routine retouch or composite using the tools you actually rely on.
- Export to the format you deliver, then check the exported file in the destination app or service.
- Confirm the editor supports your operating system and that its current account or subscription terms work for you.
