Can Email Security Tools Detect AI-Generated Phishing?

AI can make phishing messages sound polished, but email security tools can still inspect their senders, links, attachments and context. Here’s what detection can—and cannot—do.

Yes—email security tools can detect and block phishing written or polished with AI, but they do not need to identify who—or what—wrote the message to do so. They can look for suspicious senders, impersonation, links, attachments and other threat signals. Detection is not guaranteed, and clean grammar is no longer a useful sign that an email is safe. Treat AI-based detection as one part of a layered defense, not a promise that every phishing message will be stopped.

How can email tools catch phishing without detecting AI authorship?

A phishing email is a threat because of what it tries to do—such as impersonate a trusted person, lure someone to a malicious link or deliver a harmful attachment—not because of the method used to write it. Generative AI can make a lure sound fluent and convincing, but security tools can still assess the sender, identity, message context, links and files.

CISA’s Microsoft Exchange Online security baseline recommends AI-based phishing detection alongside impersonation protection and user warnings. This is configuration guidance, not a comparative test or a guarantee of a particular detection rate. The baseline PDF was published in May 2024; its phishing policy section was last modified in June 2023.

For organizations using Microsoft security tools, the Phishing Triage Agent can help analysts classify and investigate user-reported phishing using email-content analysis and threat-intelligence context. That is investigation assistance; it does not establish that every AI-written message will be blocked before delivery.

Why polished writing is no longer a reliable clue

Spelling mistakes, awkward phrasing and translation errors sometimes exposed phishing, but they are weak safeguards against AI-assisted lures. The UK National Cyber Security Centre’s January 2024 assessment says generative AI can produce convincing interactions and lure documents without those familiar errors. A professional tone or perfect grammar cannot verify a sender’s identity or make a request safe.

CISA’s phishing guidance points to more useful warning signs: suspicious or lookalike sender addresses, hyperlinks whose destination does not match their displayed text, and suspicious attachments. Even these are clues to investigate, not a complete test that proves a message is malicious or legitimate.

What layered protection should an organization use?

Use controls that address different parts of the attack. CISA’s Exchange Online baseline combines detection with impersonation checks and user warnings. Its separate LockBit ransomware guidance recommends filtering, external-email indicators, staff training, reporting and phishing-resistant multifactor authentication. These measures complement one another; none makes careful investigation unnecessary.

  • Enable phishing and impersonation protections. Review the features included in your email platform and subscription. Product capabilities and licensing can change, so verify current requirements with the provider.
  • Inspect more than the message’s wording. Use sender and identity checks, link and attachment analysis, and post-delivery scanning or remediation where the service supports them.
  • Warn users about relevant risk. Make unfamiliar or external senders visible, and train staff not to treat polished writing as proof of legitimacy.
  • Make reporting actionable. Provide a clear way to report suspicious mail and route reports into a response workflow.
  • Strengthen account and domain defenses. SPF, DKIM and DMARC help authenticate domains and address spoofing; phishing-resistant MFA can reduce the consequences of stolen credentials. Neither is an AI-authorship detector.

CISA’s guidance on generative AI and elections also describes phishing-resistant MFA as a complementary protection. Email authentication helps establish whether a message is authorized to use a domain, but it does not prove that the message’s content or request is harmless.

How should an organization evaluate an email security tool?

Compare verifiable controls and operational fit rather than relying on a vendor’s claim that it can spot “AI-written” email. Test with representative, current attack samples and track both missed threats and false positives; a filter that catches more suspicious mail may also disrupt legitimate messages. Measure how quickly analysts can investigate reports and remediate threats, too.

  • Sender, identity and impersonation analysis
  • Link and attachment inspection
  • Post-delivery scanning and remediation
  • Threat-intelligence context and integration with tenant or identity systems
  • User reporting and analyst triage workflow
  • False-positive handling, configuration and licensing requirements
  • Whether evaluation methods are independently described and applicable to your environment

There is no shared benchmark in the cited sources that supports a universal accuracy figure or a head-to-head ranking for current commercial tools detecting AI-generated phishing. Treat vendor test results as specific to the vendor’s samples, method and conditions—not as a guarantee of real-world performance. A 2024 research preprint discusses machine-learning analysis of AI-based phishing and the need to train systems on AI-generated examples, but its abstract does not establish a universal real-world detection rate or compare current commercial products.
