Yes. On Android TV and Google TV, disabling a preloaded app or one of its components can disrupt another feature that depends on it. Which features are at risk varies by TV maker, model, software version, and the app involved, so there is no universal safe-to-disable list. If you only want a cleaner home screen, try hiding or reordering apps before disabling a system package.
Why disabling one app can affect another feature
Android lets apps contain components such as activities, services, receivers, and providers, and its PackageManager documentation recognizes that components can have dependencies. If a component another feature needs is unavailable, that feature may stop working.

This technical explanation establishes that dependency problems are possible; it does not identify which packages a particular TV uses for its home screen, voice controls, or other functions. The effect depends on the TV and the specific component changed.
What “disable” can mean on a TV
These actions are not interchangeable. Their availability and recovery options vary by device and software version.

| Action | What it changes | Scope and considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Hide or reorder an app | Changes what is shown or where an app appears on the home screen. | Does not disable the app package. Google TV supports Apps only mode for a profile and lets users reorder apps; the app controls vary by interface. |
| Uninstall a user-installed app | Removes an app installed by the user, where the TV offers that option. | Applies to that app, not automatically to related system packages. Removal options depend on the TV. |
| Disable an app in Settings | Makes an app unavailable through the TV’s app controls. | May affect dependent components. Whether Settings offers an enable or restore path depends on the device. |
| Uninstall updates | Reverts an app to the version supplied with the TV, where that option exists. | This is different from disabling the app; it changes the installed version rather than simply hiding it. |
| Disable a package or component with ADB or another package-level tool | Changes package or component state outside the ordinary TV app controls. | Can affect system components. The reviewed platform and manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal safe list or recovery sequence. |
Try a less disruptive cleanup first
Hide or reorder apps on Google TV
If the goal is a less cluttered home screen, Google TV’s Apps only mode changes what is shown for a profile; it is not the same as disabling the launcher or an app package. Google explains how to use this setting in its Apps only mode help. You can also reorder apps using Google’s Google TV and Android TV app-management guidance.
Use the TV’s own app controls
Start with the options exposed in the TV’s Settings. Google’s Android TV guidance describes a Settings > Apps route to installed apps, but available options can differ by device; see Google’s Android TV and Google TV app guidance. Sony publishes separate instructions for supported Sony models and software versions in How do I close or disable apps on my Android TV / Google TV?. Sony’s steps should not be assumed to match another manufacturer’s menu.

How to reduce the risk if you choose to disable an app
- Identify the exact TV and software. Note the maker, model, whether its interface is Android TV or Google TV, and the software version.
- Check the exact app name and the available Settings options. Prefer the manufacturer’s normal controls. Do not assume an app’s name reveals every function or dependency.
- Change one app at a time. This cautious troubleshooting approach makes it easier to connect a problem to the change; it is not a universal manufacturer procedure.
- Test the functions you rely on. Check home-screen display and navigation, remote operation, voice or assistant features, settings panels, and the apps used in your household.
- Use the restore option available for that TV if something stops working. The reviewed guidance does not establish one recovery sequence that applies to every Android TV or Google TV.
Avoid disabling the launcher, Google Play services, setup components, or an unidentified package based only on a package-name list from a forum. The sources do not establish that these are safe to disable across devices.

What this does—and does not—say about performance and security
Disabling a preloaded app is not established as a general way to make a TV faster. Android TV developer guidance says memory pressure can make user-visible services such as volume control, picture settings, and voice assistant laggy or unavailable, but that is context about memory pressure—not evidence that disabling an app causes those issues or improves performance. See Android TV memory-usage guidance.
