Clear it with a scythe, then replant something suited to the current season if enough days remain for it to grow. The cause matters: a missed watering day pauses an immature crop’s growth, but does not kill it.
How to tell whether a crop is dead or just stalled
First check the crop’s situation rather than assuming that a brown-looking stage means it has died. A missed watering day prevents an immature crop from growing that day; it does not, by itself, kill the plant. The available crop and watering rules do not provide a complete visual guide for identifying every seed’s growth stages, so use the season and the crop’s normal progress as context.

Why crops die at the change of season
Season changes are the usual reason an outdoor crop is dead. At the beginning of a new season, crops that cannot grow in that season wither. Crops that are able to grow in the incoming season can continue through the transition. Check the crop’s season suitability before deciding whether to leave it in place; the Crops page and Seasons page describe these rules.

What to do with a dead crop
- Clear the dead plant. Use a scythe to remove it. The soil tile can remain tilled, which may save you from preparing it again.
- Check the calendar. Choose a crop that grows in the current season, and make sure its growth time fits within the days left in that season.
- Replant if it makes sense. If the crop cannot finish growing in the remaining time, choose a faster-growing option or wait for the next season rather than planting something that will wither at the next transition.
Greenhouse crops follow a different seasonal rule
Crops in the greenhouse do not disappear just because the outdoor season changes. They still need watering, including on rainy days. The greenhouse changes the seasonal risk, not the watering requirement; see the Stardew Valley Wiki’s Greenhouse page.

- Missed watering, but the crop is otherwise growing: Water it and allow for a day of delayed growth.
- Crop withered at a season change: Scythe it away and replant a crop suited to the new season if time allows.
- Crop is in the greenhouse: It is not subject to ordinary season-end disappearance, but continue watering it.
These rules describe the standard mechanics reflected in the cited wiki pages. They do not establish whether every modded setup or future game update behaves identically.
