Do Hornby OO and Märklin H0 use the same track gauge?
Yes. Hornby gives both OO and H0 a track gauge of 16.5 mm. Their scales differ: OO is 1:76, while H0 is 1:87. So the rails are spaced alike, but the models are not necessarily the same size. These are manufacturer specifications in Hornby’s guide to model railway scales, published 11 October 2022 and accessed 7 October 2026.

Why does matching gauge not make the systems interchangeable?
Gauge tells you the spacing between the running rails; it does not establish how a track supplies power or communicates with a locomotive. Märklin describes its H0 C Track as using a middle conductor, with the two running rails serving as a common ground. Hornby lists conventional analogue control as 12 V DC. Those descriptions point to different electrical arrangements, so shared gauge alone is not a reason to apply power to a Hornby locomotive on Märklin track.
Märklin’s product page for H0 C Track article 24130 identifies middle-conductor operation and says Märklin H0 models work on C Track. That is a statement about Märklin H0 equipment, not a certification of Hornby locomotives. Hornby’s Track and Power information describes its conventional analogue system.

Can a Hornby locomotive run on Märklin track?
Do not assume an ordinary Hornby OO locomotive will run simply because it fits the 16.5 mm gauge. The Märklin C Track middle-conductor arrangement is not the same as the conventional Hornby analogue system described by Hornby. The cited manufacturer information does not establish that a standard Hornby two-rail locomotive can be operated directly on Märklin C Track, nor does it verify a general-purpose adapter or conversion procedure.
For any particular locomotive, check its manual and the instructions for the track and controller before connecting it. Do not infer compatibility from the wheel spacing or from the fact that a locomotive is described as digital.

Does DCC make Hornby and Märklin compatible?
No blanket guarantee follows from DCC. Hornby explains that digital command control uses a controller and a decoder fitted to the locomotive. But the cited Hornby information does not certify every Hornby decoder and controller combination for Märklin three-rail track, and the cited Märklin track page does not certify cross-brand DCC combinations.
Confirm the decoder, controller protocol and track requirements for the specific equipment. If the manufacturer documentation does not confirm the combination, do not treat it as compatible.

What should you check before choosing a layout?
- Identify the track system. Confirm whether the layout uses Märklin H0 C Track with a middle conductor or Hornby OO track.
- Check each locomotive. Use its manufacturer documentation to establish whether it is analogue or digital and which track and power arrangements are permitted.
- Match the controller to the equipment. Follow the locomotive, decoder, controller and track instructions; do not rely on gauge or brand alone.
- Choose the system around the fleet. If you are building a complete layout, select track and control equipment that the manufacturers document for your locomotives.
If you are choosing Märklin H0, article 24130 is a Märklin C Track product, not a converter or a fix for running Hornby two-rail locomotives on it. Its specifications are on the official Märklin product page.
