Can Comet Browser Autofill 2FA Codes? How 1Password Works

Comet can autofill 2FA codes using 1Password’s browser extension, with user-directed approval. Here’s how the integration works and what to know about security.

Yes. Comet can autofill two-factor authentication (2FA) codes through 1Password’s official browser extension, which 1Password says is compatible with Comet. Treat this as user-directed sign-in assistance—not a way to bypass a site’s second factor or a guarantee that an AI agent can enter codes unattended.

What Comet’s 2FA integration does

On September 17, 2025, 1Password announced an extension that works with Comet and can fill usernames, passwords, and 2FA codes. Its product copy describes signing in with those details, while its explanation says filling is driven by a deterministic notification and explicit user action. In other words, the documented capability is autofill under user direction, not invisible access to a code by Comet’s AI assistant.

1Password’s announcement quotes its VP of Product and AI, Anand Srinivas: “Authorization must be deterministic, not probabilistic.” That is the company’s stated design principle for credential filling, not an independent security assessment. Read 1Password’s Comet partnership announcement.

How to use 1Password autofill in Comet

  1. Install or enable the official 1Password browser extension in Comet.
  2. Make sure the relevant site’s login details and one-time password are saved in 1Password.
  3. When signing in, use the extension’s supported autofill flow and approve filling when prompted. Keep control of when credentials and codes are entered.

The announcement establishes the integration generally, not support for every website, authentication method, or Comet agent task. The exact prompts and site behavior may vary; no universal compatibility guarantee is established.

Autofill is not a 2FA bypass

A one-time code remains part of the website’s second-factor check. The extension can fill saved credentials and a 2FA code in the browser; the available documentation does not say Comet defeats that check, disables it, or can always complete sign-in without your involvement. Keep your account’s 2FA settings enabled according to your needs.

Security depends in part on the extension’s state

1Password’s January 30, 2026 advisory warns that an AI assistant operating in a browser may trigger ordinary extension behavior if the 1Password extension is already unlocked. This describes a risk involving normal extension actions; it is not evidence that Comet has broken 1Password’s cryptography.

1Password identifies controls users can adjust, including disabling automatic sign-in to the 1Password web app, requiring confirmation for sensitive data, and changing lock settings. Consider requiring confirmation and choosing a shorter lock interval if you want tighter control when an assistant can interact with the browser. Read 1Password’s advisory on AI-assisted browsing.

What Comet says about data and enterprise controls

Perplexity’s Comet Data Privacy & Security FAQ says ordinary browser data is stored locally by default and account credentials may be saved in the device’s secure vault. The FAQ also says the assistant can use relevant personal context when asked to perform tasks and interact with websites on the user’s behalf. These are Perplexity’s descriptions, not an independent security audit. Credential storage and the processing of page or personal context for a requested task are separate considerations.
