It resets the motherboard’s BIOS configuration to its defaults; it does not repair a failed power supply or other damaged hardware. First work out whether the PC has no power, fails to boot, or powers on without showing an image—those symptoms call for different checks.
What “dead PC” means—and when a CMOS reset is relevant
A computer that will not start can have three distinct symptoms. AMD separates no power, no boot, and no display: a PC with no power shows no fans moving or motherboard lights; a no-boot problem involves startup or POST; and a no-display problem means the system powers on but no image appears. A CMOS reset is most relevant when BIOS settings are suspected of preventing startup—not as a first diagnosis for a machine with no signs of power.

- No power: Check the wall outlet, power cable, PSU switch, and motherboard power connections first. A CMOS reset cannot restore power to a failed or disconnected component.
- No boot or POST: If the computer receives power but does not complete its startup checks, BIOS settings may be one possible cause. A reset can restore defaults, but it does not establish that the CPU, memory, or other hardware is healthy.
- No display: Check the monitor, its input and cable, and the graphics connection as well as the PC. A no-display symptom can arise before or after POST, so use the motherboard’s indicators and manual to narrow it down.
What clearing CMOS does
CMOS is commonly used to refer to the motherboard’s stored BIOS configuration. Clearing it restores BIOS settings to their defaults. This may help if a customized setting is preventing startup, but it is a troubleshooting step, not a hardware repair or proof that the system is otherwise sound. AMD describes a power flush or model-specific CMOS clear as an option when BIOS settings are suspected; ASUS includes clearing CMOS in a broader no-power, no-boot, and no-display troubleshooting sequence.

How to clear CMOS safely
Use the exact procedure in the manual for your motherboard. Boards differ in whether they provide a clear-CMOS button, jumper, or removable battery, and the location and required wait can vary. Do not assume a jumper position or battery-removal duration from instructions for another model.

- Each item is tested before shipping.what you see is what you get.
- Find the motherboard model and manual. Use the board’s exact model name to locate its manufacturer’s instructions for clearing CMOS.
- Record BIOS settings you customized. Clearing CMOS erases customized BIOS settings. Intel advises recording them first; date and time may also need to be set again after the reset. See Intel’s CMOS reset guidance.
- Shut down and disconnect power. Follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions and disconnect the power supply before using a jumper or removing the battery. Do not probe components while the system is energized.
- Use only the documented reset method. If the manual specifies a button, jumper, or battery method, follow its location, sequence, and waiting time exactly. For example, MSI’s instructions for its battery-removal method specify waiting five minutes; its separate BIOS-access guidance says to wait 3–5 minutes before reinstalling the battery. Those timings are model- and procedure-specific, not universal.
- Restore power and test startup. Reconnect power and try starting the PC. If it boots, enter BIOS setup if needed to set the date and time and restore any required settings, such as memory profiles or boot order.
MSI documents both a designated CMOS jumper and battery removal in its no-power/no-display troubleshooting guidance. Its BIOS-access instructions describe the battery method and its wait. The manual for your own motherboard takes precedence over these examples.
Which reset method should you use?
Use whichever method your motherboard manual documents and that you can access safely. There is no basis here to say one method works better than another.

- These batteries cannot be charged, it is very dangerous to charge them. Please keep out of reach of children. Do NOT SWALLOW.
- Suitable for Computer Replacement Battery
- No leak, excellent cost performance and long cycle life. Keep the cells in 40%-60% charged state during long period storage. We recommend to charge the battery every 3 months after receipt of the battery and maintain the voltage, and store the battery in a cool and dry place. Please keep out of reach of children.

| Method | What to check | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Clear-CMOS button or jumper | Confirm its location and exact procedure in the motherboard manual. | Do not guess which pins to bridge or how long to hold a button; instructions vary by model. |
| Remove the CMOS battery | Follow the manual’s removal and waiting instructions, then reinstall it as directed. | Battery access and wait time differ. Replace a battery only if the manual specifies its type and there is evidence it is depleted, such as settings or the clock not persisting. |
If the PC still will not start
A failed CMOS reset does not identify the faulty component. Continue with checks matched to the symptom, changing one thing at a time and using the motherboard manual where available.

- Test the outlet and check that the power cable is firmly connected.
- Check that the PSU’s rear switch is on, if it has one.
- Verify the motherboard’s main power connections are seated, following the board and PSU documentation.
- If the system remains completely unresponsive, seek qualified repair support rather than assuming BIOS settings are the cause.
If the PC powers on but does not complete POST
- Check whether the CPU is supported by the motherboard and whether it requires a compatible BIOS version. AMD’s boot troubleshooting guidance identifies CPU and BIOS compatibility as a check.
- Use the motherboard’s debug LEDs or beep indicators, if available, and consult the manual to interpret them.
- Reseat or test memory and graphics components only as appropriate for your system and the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Disconnect external and nonessential devices and try a minimal configuration. A successful start in that configuration can help identify a peripheral or component preventing startup.
If the PC powers on but shows no image
- Confirm that the monitor is powered on, set to the correct input, and connected with a working cable to the appropriate graphics output.
- Check the motherboard’s debug indicators or buzzer, if supported, to see whether startup stops at a particular stage.
- Follow the board maker’s graphics and minimal-component checks before concluding that the CMOS reset failed.
ASUS’s no-power/no-boot/no-display guidance covers power, CPU, memory, graphics, monitor, minimal-component testing, CMOS clearing, Q-LEDs, and buzzer troubleshooting. MSI’s troubleshooting steps also include front-panel switch checks, minimal POST configuration, and debug LEDs. If these manufacturer-directed checks do not resolve the fault, contact the board or system maker or a qualified repair service.

What the “dozen PCs” claim does—and does not—show
The title’s count is a personal account, not an independently established success rate. Manufacturer guidance supports CMOS clearing as one possible step for certain startup symptoms; it does not show how often the reset fixes a problem, or imply that it can revive every PC described as dead.
