Can Claude Code Use a Browser You’ve Already Logged Into? Key Facts

Claude Code can connect to browser automation tools, but Anthropic does not promise reuse of a browser profile or website login. Check the integration’s session and permission behavior.

Claude Code can connect to browser tools, but Anthropic’s documentation does not say that Claude Code can take over an existing browser profile or reuse a website login you established once. Whether a signed-in session persists depends on the browser automation tool you choose and its own authentication and profile support.

How Claude Code interacts with a browser

Browser interaction is an integration workflow, not a documented built-in promise that Claude Code will control your usual browser. Anthropic says Claude Code can connect to external tools through the Model Context Protocol (MCP). Its prompting guidance names browser-use tools and browser automation MCP servers as options for verifying user-interface work. Anthropic’s prompting guidance says: “Tools that let Claude verify UI work are helpful, such as the computer use tool, the browser use tool, or a browser automation MCP server.”

That identifies a category of tools, not a guarantee that any particular integration can attach to a browser already open on your computer. You need to select and configure a compatible tool separately, following its documentation for browser access and authentication. Claude Code’s MCP documentation explains the connection route; it does not establish that a website’s cookies or login session transfer to an automation tool.

Does logging in once keep you signed in?

Not necessarily. Anthropic’s cited documentation does not specify whether a browser automation tool can attach to an existing profile, where it stores cookies, or whether an authenticated website session persists between runs. Those behaviors are determined by the particular tool and its configuration. Check its current documentation for each of these points before relying on an existing login:

  • Can it use an existing browser profile, or does it launch a separate browser instance?
  • Does it preserve website login state between runs?
  • How does it establish and store authentication?
  • What browser actions and account permissions does it expose to Claude Code?

A tool’s OAuth flow for connecting to an MCP server is not evidence that it inherits your login to a website in a browser. Treat server authentication and website authentication as separate until the integration’s documentation confirms otherwise.

Keep Claude Code login separate from website login

Claude Code’s account or enterprise sign-in authenticates Claude Code for model access. It is distinct from signing in to a website in a browser, and it does not by itself give a browser automation tool the website’s session. Anthropic lists Claude Code authentication options in its setup guide; those options should not be read as a promise of browser-profile or cookie reuse.

Configure the integration and its permissions

  1. Choose a browser-use tool or browser automation MCP server. Confirm that its current documentation describes the browser instance, profile, and authentication behavior you need.
  2. Connect it to Claude Code through MCP, if that is how the tool integrates. Follow the tool’s setup instructions as well as Anthropic’s MCP connection guidance; remote MCP servers may have their own authentication flow.
  3. Review the permissions before use. Claude Code has controls for allowing or disallowing tools. Decide which actions the integration may perform and whether they require your approval. Avoid treating unattended browser actions as the default. The CLI reference documents permission settings and the permission-prompt bypass flag; consult the current documentation for the behavior of your version.
  4. Test the website session with the chosen tool. Verify that it can access the intended page and determine whether the login survives a later run. Do not assume success from Claude Code’s own sign-in or the MCP server’s OAuth setup.
