Yes. Claude Code can read and edit Obsidian notes if it can access the folder containing your vault. Obsidian notes are Markdown plain-text files, so Claude Code can work with them like other files. Start it in the vault folder or explicitly grant access to that folder, then review any proposed changes before accepting them.
How to give Claude Code access to an Obsidian vault
An Obsidian vault is a folder on your computer. Obsidian documents how to create a vault or open an existing folder as one in its vault guidance. Because its notes are Markdown files, other text editors can edit them too, as explained in How Obsidian stores data.

- Choose the scope. Decide which vault, folders, or notes Claude Code should work on. For a cautious first attempt, use a small test folder or a copy of a few notes.
- Start Claude Code in the vault. Open a terminal in the vault folder and launch Claude Code there. Anthropic’s CLI reference documents
--add-dirfor granting access to an additional directory if you start elsewhere. - Describe the task and boundaries. Name the files or folders to change, explain the intended result, and say what to preserve—for example, frontmatter, wikilinks, filenames, or attachments.
- Review proposed edits. Check the changes before accepting them. Keep access limited to the work at hand rather than enabling broad permissions by default.
How file edits and permissions work
Claude Code’s access depends on its working directory, the directories granted to it, and its permission settings. Anthropic’s Identity and Access Management documentation describes working directories and permission modes; its security guidance covers permission controls and review. Exact prompts and interface details can vary by installed version and settings, so consult the permissions UI in your version or use /permissions to inspect available controls.

Will changes show up in Obsidian?
Obsidian says it refreshes its view after external changes to vault files. Changes Claude Code makes to Markdown files should therefore appear in Obsidian. A vault can also contain configuration files and attachments, so a narrowly scoped task helps avoid unintended changes.
If the vault is synchronized across devices or through another file-sync service, avoid overlapping edits by multiple tools until you understand how that setup handles conflicts. Obsidian’s guidance on local and remote vaults explains its terminology; behavior with third-party sync arrangements can differ.

Direct file access or Obsidian’s CLI?

For routine Markdown work, direct file access is the simpler route. Use the Obsidian CLI when the operation calls for one of its Obsidian-specific commands rather than ordinary file editing.

No. Claude Code runs locally, but Anthropic’s data-usage documentation says prompts and model outputs are sent over the network to interact with the model. If note content is included in a prompt or read into model context, it may be transmitted for processing. Retention and training treatment can depend on your plan, settings, and applicable terms; check the current terms for your account before using sensitive notes.

For important material, keep an independent backup and review edits. Test the workflow on a few copied notes first, checking that links and frontmatter remain intact before using it more broadly.
