Can Claude Answer Your Emails? It Can Draft, but You Send

Claude can use connected Gmail to find context and draft a reply, but you must review and send the message yourself.

Claude can use a connected Gmail account to find email context and draft a reply, but Anthropic’s documented Gmail integration cannot create or modify emails. You still need to check the draft in your email client and send it yourself. So Claude can help answer your emails; it does not send them for you.

What Claude can do with Gmail

Anthropic’s Google Workspace integration lets Claude search connected Gmail messages and use relevant email as context for an answer. Anthropic introduced the integration for Gmail, Calendar, and Docs as a way to bring Workspace information into Claude conversations: Anthropic’s Google Workspace announcement.

In practice, you can ask Claude to locate a thread, summarize what was discussed, and prepare a reply based on that context. The distinction that matters is between drafting and acting: Anthropic says the integrations do not support creating or modifying emails. Claude’s proposed text remains a draft for you to review and send from Gmail or another email client. See Anthropic’s Google Workspace integration help article for the documented capabilities and limitations.

How to ask Claude for a useful reply draft

  1. Connect your Google account. Authenticate directly to Google when enabling the Gmail integration in Claude. The integration is available to paid Claude.ai users and is described as being in beta; check Anthropic’s help article for current eligibility and status.
  2. Ask Claude to find and summarize the thread. Specify the sender, subject, or other identifying details, and ask for the key points, open questions, and commitments. Confirm that Claude has found the right conversation before you ask for a response.
  3. Give the drafting task its own request. State the outcome you want, the tone, and any facts Claude should include or avoid. Anthropic’s connector guide recommends breaking a complex task into steps and checking related email before drafting. Its example is: “First check your calendar, then search related emails, then draft your response.” See Anthropic’s connector guide.
  4. Verify the draft against the original email. Check names, dates, promises, attachments, figures, and sensitive details. Correct anything that is missing or wrong; a polished-sounding reply is not proof that every detail is accurate.
  5. Move the approved text to your email client and send it. Claude’s documented Gmail integration does not create or modify the message, so you remain responsible for sending the final reply.

What to know before connecting Gmail

Anthropic says you authenticate directly to Google, Claude can access only the account you connect, and it accesses Gmail or Calendar when a request requires information from those sources. The company says it retrieves the minimum information needed for the response. Retrieved connector data is stored on Anthropic’s servers with the associated chat; deleting that chat deletes the retrieved data. The details are in Anthropic’s integration help article and its data-handling explanation.

Anthropic’s privacy article for consumer Claude accounts, dated March 16, 2026, distinguishes raw connector content from email text copied into a conversation: it says raw connector content is not included in model improvement, while content copied into a chat may be. Whether chats are used for improvement also depends on user settings and the exceptions Anthropic lists. Read Anthropic’s privacy explanation before connecting an account or pasting sensitive material, and avoid sharing information you do not want in a chat.

What this workflow does—and does not—establish

This setup is best understood as email-context retrieval plus writing assistance. It can help turn an existing thread into a proposed response, but the available documentation does not show that Claude sends, edits, or saves a reply in Gmail. Nor do the cited sources establish a particular time saving, error rate, or improvement in reply quality. Treat the draft as text to check, not an automatically completed email.
