How to Test AI Game Assets in the Build Before They Ship

Review an AI-generated asset in the game build where players will encounter it, not just in a generator preview. Define its intended use, test it with representative camera, lighting, animation and platform settings, check its rights and provenance, then have a human decide whether to accept, revise, replace or reject it.

How do I review AI-generated assets in-game before shipping them?

Start by treating the generated output as a candidate rather than a finished production asset. A polished preview cannot establish whether an asset reads at gameplay distance, fits the art direction, behaves correctly in motion or is appropriate to ship. There is no universal published technical checklist or benchmark for this review; the steps below are a practical production workflow, not a formal standard.

1. Define where and how the asset will be used

Before importing it, record what the asset is, where it appears, whether players can see it, its expected size and camera distance, and whether it animates or responds to gameplay. Set acceptance criteria first. For example, a small background prop and a close-up interactive object have different readability and detail needs.

2. Import it into a representative build

Use the intended engine settings and, where feasible, the target platform. Inspect the candidate with production lighting, shaders, post-processing, camera framing and nearby assets. Check it both at normal gameplay distance and close up: details that disappear during play may be harmless, while seams or artifacts visible in close-up may matter for an inspectable object.

3. Check visual and technical fit

Use checks that match the asset’s role rather than relying on a single beauty shot:

  • Readability: Does the silhouette remain recognizable at the intended camera distance?
  • Surface quality: Look for texture seams, stray details, inconsistent materials and other visible artifacts.
  • Art direction: Does the asset fit the style, palette and level of detail of the surrounding game?
  • Scale and placement: Check proportions, clipping and contact with nearby geometry.
  • Motion: If animated, inspect deformation and behavior during gameplay, not only in a still pose.
  • Interface use: If it appears in a UI, confirm that it remains legible in its actual layout.
  • Runtime constraints: Check performance and memory impact in the relevant build.

Test the asset in motion and in more than one representative scene when its use calls for it. A result that looks acceptable in one lighting setup may not hold up elsewhere.

4. Review provenance and rights

Check the generative tool’s current terms and license, including any restrictions on output use and any attribution or disclosure conditions. Keep a traceability note for production: the tool or service and version if available, the generation or acquisition date, source material or prompt where appropriate, edits, reviewer and final decision. This is a recommended recordkeeping practice, not a format established as legally mandatory by the sources cited here.

Rights questions can depend on jurisdiction. In U.S. guidance, the Copyright Office’s January 29, 2025 announcement of Part 2 of its AI report says that AI outputs may be protected only where a human author determined sufficient expressive elements. Its AI resource page also provides registration guidance for works containing AI-generated material. These statements describe U.S. copyright guidance, not the rules of every country.

5. Record a human production decision

Have a human reviewer mark the candidate as accepted, revised, replaced or rejected, and identify the approved version clearly. Keep rejected and superseded candidates out of shipping builds. This is a sensible production control, not a platform mandate identified in the sources below.

Can I use AI-generated assets in my game?

Whether an asset can be used depends on the terms that apply to the tool, its output and any source material, as well as the laws and platform rules relevant to the release. Review those terms rather than assuming that generation alone grants unrestricted rights. Kongregate’s safe-use guidance advises developers to review tool terms and licenses; its guidance also places responsibility for content and rights compliance on developers.

For practical review, compare candidates on fit in the target engine and platform, readability at the intended camera distance, consistency with the art direction, clarity of provenance and rights, revision effort, performance constraints, and disclosure or support requirements. These are decision factors, not a published quantitative scoring system.

Do I need to disclose AI-generated content on Steam?

Steamworks’ Content Survey includes a section about generative AI used in development or in the product. The page says prerelease review evaluates AI-generated output in the same way as other content and checks whether the game meets its stated promises. Check the live survey when submitting, because platform forms and procedures can change. Describe the relevant use accurately rather than assuming every platform asks the same questions.

How can I check an AI art asset before adding it to a game?

Use the same context-first review for 2D art, textures, icons or other visual assets: place the candidate in its actual screen or scene, check it at the size and distance players will see, and look for artifacts and style mismatches. If it is animated, interactive or rendered under changing conditions, inspect those states too. Then verify terms and rights, record the outcome, and keep only the approved version in the shipping build.

What should I disclose on other platforms?

Disclosure requirements differ by store. Kongregate’s developer guidance requests a player-facing disclosure in the game description and says developers are responsible for included content and rights. Follow the current instructions for each platform where the game will appear; do not treat Steam’s survey or another store’s policy as universal.

Why does a review process matter at scale?

An asset’s generated origin does not establish its quality or suitability. In an Epic Developer Community announcement with no publication year shown in the search result, Epic described more than 41,000 AI-generated assets uploaded to Fab in a short timeframe, which it said overwhelmed systems for managing and surfacing content. The announcement described planned creator labeling and a reporting path for suspected mislabeling. That is one platform’s account of a marketplace-management incident, not a measure of typical upload volume, defect rates or the quality of generated assets.
