What’s actually slowing this PC down?

No. ChatGPT may help you put thoughts into words, find general information, or prepare for a conversation with a professional, but it cannot replace a therapist’s assessment, clinical judgment, ongoing treatment, or human relationship. OpenAI says ChatGPT is not a substitute for therapy or professional care, and the American Psychological Association (APA) warns that chatbots have important limits in assessment and crisis response.
What ChatGPT can help with
Used as an optional aid—not as treatment—a conversation with ChatGPT may help you:

- Put a concern or feeling into words.
- Organize questions to take to a therapist or other clinician.
- Learn general information about a mental-health topic.
- Think through a possible next step, such as reaching out to someone you trust or seeking professional support.
OpenAI describes these as goals for supportive responses and real-world help-seeking. They are not proof that ChatGPT is clinically effective. A chatbot’s conversational tone can feel supportive, but it does not mean it has assessed you or is providing therapy. The APA also cautions that different tools vary: a general-purpose chatbot is not interchangeable with every wellness app or a tool developed for a specific clinical purpose.

Assess your full situation
A qualified professional can consider more than the text or voice you enter. As the APA explains, an assessment may draw on verbal and nonverbal cues—including body language, tone, cadence, and facial expression—and biological, psychological, social, individual, and historical context. A chatbot may lack those details or misunderstand what you share.

Diagnose you or provide accountable, individualized treatment
ChatGPT can produce explanations or suggestions, but that is not the same as a diagnosis or a treatment plan grounded in a clinician’s judgment and responsibility. The APA advises people to understand the fundamental differences between a chatbot and a qualified mental-health provider.
Provide an ongoing therapeutic relationship
Therapy involves continuing work with a human professional who can respond to your circumstances over time. A chatbot can generate conversation, but that alone does not create the professional relationship or continuity of care that therapy provides.

Manage a crisis dependably
The APA describes chatbot crisis-management ability as limited and unpredictable and warns that relying solely on an app during a mental-health emergency can be dangerous. Safety features and referrals may offer a path to human help, but they are not a guarantee of timely or appropriate crisis care.

What the available numbers do—and do not—show
Two kinds of figures are sometimes cited in discussions of AI and mental health: companies’ descriptions of development work and psychologists’ reports of patient use or concern. Neither establishes that ChatGPT can replace therapy.

| Finding | What it represents | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| OpenAI says more than 170 mental-health experts contributed to work on responses to sensitive conversations in 2025. | A company-reported development figure. | Independent evidence that ChatGPT treats mental-health conditions effectively. |
| OpenAI says more than 80 licensed mental-health experts helped develop MentalHealthBench in 2026. | A company-reported description of an open benchmark for evaluating responses in realistic mental-health conversations. | A clinical recommendation or independent validation of chatbot therapy. |
| In a 2026 APA survey, 33% of psychologists reported patients using AI to assist in therapy or treatment; 34% reported use for self-discipline, affirmations, or behavioral reminders. | Psychologists’ reported observations about patient use. | A controlled trial or a measure of treatment effectiveness. |
| In the same survey, 89% of psychologists said they worried chatbots might inadvertently encourage self-harm; 97% said chatbots may inadvertently reinforce negative behaviors or delusional beliefs, and 94% said current chatbots cannot treat conditions with appropriate nuance. | Surveyed psychologists’ concerns and opinions. | Measured rates of chatbot-caused harm or proof that a particular conversation will have those effects. |
These findings are useful context, not a substitute for evaluating a tool or deciding what care you need.
How to decide whether to use ChatGPT or seek therapy
Consider the purpose and the stakes. If you want to organize your thoughts or learn general information, ChatGPT may be a convenient starting point. If you need an assessment, diagnosis, treatment, or continuing support, speak with a qualified mental-health professional. For any tool you use, consider what information it collects or retains, who operates it, what policies apply, and whether it offers continuity or access to a person. Privacy rules and professional obligations differ across services, so check the terms for the specific product rather than assuming they are the same.

OpenAI’s 2026 announcement describes MentalHealthBench as a way to measure progress toward responses that promote well-being and guide people toward real-world support; it also explicitly says ChatGPT is not a substitute for therapy or professional care. The benchmark announcement is not a clinical endorsement of using ChatGPT as treatment.

Do not treat a chatbot’s answer as a clinical decision. If it seems unsafe, inaccurate, or makes your situation worse, stop relying on it for that concern and contact a qualified professional or someone you trust. For a consequential decision about symptoms, diagnosis, medication, or treatment, seek guidance from a clinician rather than asking the chatbot to resolve the uncertainty.
If you may be in immediate danger
If you cannot stay safe, believe you are in immediate danger, or need urgent medical attention, contact local emergency services or a crisis helpline. Do not depend on ChatGPT as your crisis response. OpenAI’s Help Center says people in the United States can call or text 988; people elsewhere can look for local options through Find A Helpline. Availability and procedures vary by location.
OpenAI also describes Trusted Contact as an optional feature that may connect an adult with a chosen person when a serious safety concern is detected. OpenAI’s Help Center says it is not an emergency service, a crisis-response system, or a substitute for mental-health care. Availability depends on account type, age, and location.
