No. ChatGPT may offer a place to put thoughts into words, but it is not an established substitute for a teen’s licensed therapist. The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) says AI in pediatric mental-health care is still in its infancy and calls for rigorous validation, privacy protections, transparency, and clinician oversight. ChatGPT for Teens is described as a product for learning and everyday use—not psychotherapy.
Why ChatGPT is not a therapist
A helpful-sounding response is not the same as a clinical assessment or treatment. A therapist can evaluate a teen’s circumstances, build an ongoing relationship, use professional judgment, and adjust care as needs change. A general-purpose chatbot cannot provide that accountable, continuous human care.

AACAP’s June 2026 policy statement says, “The application of AI in the delivery of pediatric mental health care is still in its infancy.” It recommends rigorous testing and validation, including testing with diverse real-world users, along with clinician feedback and oversight. These are professional recommendations; they do not prove that every chatbot fails in every respect. They do make clear that an empathetic tone or product safeguard is not evidence that a system can replace treatment.

What ChatGPT may help with—and where it stops
A teen might use a chatbot to put a concern into words or think of a question to raise with a trusted adult. But its response can be inaccurate or miss important context. It cannot be relied on to diagnose a condition, monitor a teen’s wellbeing, or decide what level of care is needed.
AI used in pediatric mental-health care raises questions that extend beyond the quality of a single answer. AACAP calls for transparency when AI is involved in care, protection of minors’ health data, attention to equity, ongoing clinician feedback, and oversight that prevents automated systems from withholding needed care or overriding clinical judgment.

Are ChatGPT’s teen safeguards enough?
OpenAI describes stronger safeguards, age-appropriate protections, break reminders, and cues that identify ChatGPT as AI. Those measures may reduce some risks, but they are not clinical supervision and cannot guarantee that a conversation is safe or clinically correct.
Parental controls do not show parents every conversation
OpenAI says its parental controls do not give parents access to a teen’s conversations or live monitoring through the linked controls. In certain serious situations, a safety notification may be sent after review. OpenAI says these notifications are not real-time monitoring, may not identify every concern, and do not replace professional care or emergency services. See OpenAI’s guide to managing parental controls.

Age guidance is platform guidance, not a universal law
OpenAI’s guidance says ChatGPT is not meant for children under 13, and users aged 13–18 need parental consent. These are OpenAI’s platform rules and guidance, not a statement of universal legal requirements. Check OpenAI’s age-safety guidance for its current wording.
When a teen should seek help
If distress is persistent, worsening, or affecting daily life, encourage the teen to talk with a trusted adult and a qualified mental-health professional. Concerns may include anxiety, depression, trauma, eating-related distress, thoughts of self-harm, or major changes in sleep or functioning. These examples are prompts to seek support, not a diagnostic checklist.

A parent or caregiver can listen without judgment, ask what support would feel manageable, and help arrange contact with a qualified clinician. OpenAI’s teen-safety guidance also points teens toward trusted offline support. Do not make ChatGPT the only place a teen turns for help.
If there is immediate danger
If someone may be in immediate danger, contact local emergency services or a crisis service. In the United States, call or text 988 for crisis support; it is not a replacement for ongoing therapy. Outside the United States, use the appropriate crisis or emergency service for your location. OpenAI’s guidance on teen protections and urgent support likewise directs teens toward offline help and emergency or crisis resources when risk is imminent.

AACAP’s 2024 policy statement reports that, in 2017, 20% of U.S. children and adolescents ages 9–17—about 15 million people—had diagnosable psychiatric disorders. That is historical context, not a current prevalence estimate, and it does not show that ChatGPT can treat those conditions. The statistic appears in AACAP’s 2024 policy statement on implementing 988.
The reviewed policy and product guidance do not establish replacement efficacy for ChatGPT. AACAP’s policy instead calls for rigorous validation and safeguards so automated systems do not reduce access to needed care or override clinical judgment. For the policy’s scope and recommendations, see AACAP’s 2026 statement on AI in child and adolescent mental-health care.
For product details, OpenAI’s ChatGPT for Teens announcement describes its intended everyday-use experience, and its ChatGPT for Teens help page covers the teen product. Neither is evidence that ChatGPT is psychotherapy.
