Can ChangeTower Monitor Password-Protected Web Apps?

ChangeTower can monitor some pages behind login by replaying configured user actions before each check, but it cannot monitor sites that block automated traffic.

Yes—according to ChangeTower, it can monitor a page behind a login by using Manual User Actions to replay the sign-in steps before each check. That does not guarantee every login flow will work: ChangeTower says it cannot monitor sites that block automated traffic outright.

How ChangeTower handles a password-protected page

ChangeTower’s documented approach is to configure a sequence of interactions—such as focusing a field, entering text, and clicking the sign-in button—then capture the authenticated page. The company says those actions run before each check. It describes the feature for pages such as customer portals, member-only pricing, internal dashboards, and gated documents; these are examples, not a promise that every service or authentication setup is compatible.

The procedure below follows ChangeTower Help Center’s “How can I monitor password-protected pages?” published December 26, 2025. The capability is vendor-documented, not independently tested here.

Set up a monitor for a page behind login

  1. In ChangeTower, start a new monitor and choose single-page monitoring.
  2. Enter the URL of the page you want to monitor.
  3. Under Advanced Configuration, enable Manual User Actions.
  4. Add the interactions needed to sign in. For example, focus the username field and enter the required text, then repeat for other required fields.
  5. Add an action to click the sign-in button.
  6. Adjust any optional monitoring settings and monitor details, then create the monitor.

After the configured actions run, ChangeTower says it captures the authenticated page for the check. The exact interaction sequence depends on the site’s login flow.

What can prevent monitoring from working?

Automated traffic is blocked

ChangeTower’s FAQ distinguishes pages that simply require sign-in from sites that block automated traffic. The former may be handled with manual actions; the latter cannot be monitored, according to the FAQ.

Special authentication steps

The available documentation does not establish compatibility guarantees for SSO, multi-factor authentication (MFA), CAPTCHAs, or any specific identity provider. Do not assume that a login sequence will succeed just because it works for a standard username-and-password form.

Complex flows and older guidance

An older ChangeTower guide discusses manual actions for complex login modals and single-page applications, and describes basic authentication as an option for simpler logins. Because that guide dates to approximately 2018, use the current Help Center procedure above rather than treating the older distinction as a current, exhaustive feature comparison.

Change monitoring versus taking a screenshot

ChangeTower’s feature is intended to monitor a page for changes after login. A screenshot API has a different job: it returns a captured image or PDF in response to a request. If you need recurring change monitoring, the login-action setup above addresses the question. If you instead need to capture a page programmatically, ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try first: it offers clean screenshots, bills only clean shots, and has a free plan with 1,000 shots per month.

Or skip the browser setup

For a one-off programmatic capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts a GET request with the target URL and returns an image or PDF. This cURL example saves a WebP screenshot of the page:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the request options. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. It also provides an MCP server for AI agents, and its free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does ChangeTower guarantee that every password-protected site will work?

No. ChangeTower documents the login-action capability, but does not establish universal compatibility. Sites that block automated traffic cannot be monitored, according to its FAQ.

Can I use ChangeTower’s documented setup for an SSO or MFA login?

The documentation reviewed does not settle compatibility for SSO or MFA. It does not support a blanket yes or no for those flows.
