Can Biogas-Based Hydrogen Be Carbon Negative? Lifecycle Emissions Explained

Biogas-based hydrogen can be net negative when avoided emissions or durable carbon storage outweigh the pathway’s included emissions—but the result depends on feedstock, assumptions, model version and accounting boundary.

Yes, biogas-based hydrogen can have net-negative lifecycle emissions in some assessments, but the label “biogas-based” does not guarantee a negative footprint. A pathway is negative only when its credited avoided emissions and any durable carbon removals outweigh emissions from handling the feedstock, digestion, methane leakage, upgrading, transport, energy use and hydrogen production within the stated accounting boundary.

How can hydrogen made from biogas have negative lifecycle emissions?

The negative result comes from lifecycle accounting, not from hydrogen combustion itself. Two kinds of credits can matter: emissions avoided when organic waste is managed differently than it otherwise would have been, and biogenic carbon captured from the process and stored durably underground. Those credits must be weighed against emissions across the pathway.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) describes the first mechanism this way: “Life-cycle assessment (LCA) can allow for consideration of counterfactual emissions that are avoided if the organic waste is diverted to anaerobic digesters from other previous management practices.” The word counterfactual means the alternative fate assigned to the waste in the assessment. If the waste would have produced less methane under that alternative, the avoided-emissions credit is smaller.

Biogenic carbon is not a blanket zero for the whole pathway. Fossil energy used to operate equipment, methane that escapes, emissions from upgrading and hydrogen conversion, and transport can all contribute to the result. A negative total means the credits exceed the emissions counted in that particular assessment.

Which stages belong in the calculation?

A useful assessment follows the pathway from feedstock to the point where its chosen boundary ends. Depending on the project and method, that can include:

  1. Feedstock source and baseline: Identify the organic material and what would have happened to it without the project—for example, landfill-gas management, wastewater-sludge treatment or manure management.
  2. Collection and anaerobic digestion: Account for collecting and preparing the material, digesting it and supplying energy for the process.
  3. Gas cleanup and upgrading: Include the energy and emissions involved in producing a gas suitable for the next step.
  4. Transport: Count relevant delivery and pipeline emissions, including methane leakage where the method covers it.
  5. Hydrogen production: Include the conversion process, such as reforming, and the energy it uses.
  6. Carbon capture and storage, if used: Distinguish CO2 captured from CO2 stored durably. Capture alone does not establish a removal.

The final result depends on what the assessment includes, how it treats each stage, and the unit used to report emissions. A well-to-gate result, for example, covers emissions up to the specified production-gate boundary; it should not be presented as a cradle-to-grave result.

Why the feedstock baseline can change the answer

A waste-derived pathway may receive an avoided-emissions credit only relative to a defined alternative. It is not valid to assume that every waste stream would otherwise release methane directly into the atmosphere. The alternative can differ by feedstock, location and assessment method.

DOE’s January 2025 45VH2-GREET manual illustrates how model-specific these baselines are. For wastewater-sludge gas, its modeled baseline assigns about 55% to digester heat or steam use, about 44% to flaring and about 1% to leakage. For landfill gas, the method also specifies an alternative-fate assumption. For manure-derived renewable natural gas (RNG), it uses a generic counterfactual and includes delivery, digestion, upgrading and pipeline leakage. These are assumptions in a U.S. regulatory method, not universal descriptions of every facility or waste-management system.

The scale of the underlying issue is also specific to its geography and year: DOE reports estimated U.S. manure-management emissions in 2022 of 2.31 million metric tons of methane and 64,000 metric tons of nitrous oxide. DOE says roughly 90% of the methane emissions in the cited inventory came from cattle and swine operations. Those inventory figures describe U.S. manure management; they are not the emissions of a particular hydrogen facility.

What does the DOE manure-RNG intensity mean?

The January 2025 45VH2-GREET manual reports a modeled intensity of −33.011 gCO2e/MMBtu for manure-derived RNG, including avoided emissions and upgrading under the manual’s assumptions. This is the intensity assigned to the RNG input, not the lifecycle emissions per kilogram of hydrogen. It cannot be relabeled as a hydrogen result without accounting for hydrogen conversion, its energy supply and the rest of the chosen boundary.

  • The Hydrogen fuel trolley uses zinc particles and food grade citric acid to synthesize hydrogen, and then uses the produced hydrogen and air to generate electricity to drive the trolley.
  • During the experiment, please use 80℃ hot water for Combination reaction (if the water temperature is low, the amount of hydrogen and air pressure from the Combination reaction are insufficient, the fuel cell cannot be used for power generation), and then take off the plug of the vent pipe at the lower part of the fuel cell, release the gas in the rubber hose immediately, and then plug it back immediately, so that only pure hydrogen and air are in the fuel cell, so that the fuel cell can generate hydrogen air power.

That distinction matters whenever a pathway number is quoted. Check what material or product the number describes, the functional unit (such as energy input or mass of hydrogen), which life-cycle stages it includes, and which model release produced it. Values with different units or boundaries are not directly comparable.

When can carbon capture make the pathway more negative?

Plants absorb atmospheric carbon as they grow. If CO2 from biomass-derived gas is captured during processing and then stored underground durably, an assessment can count that storage as a removal. DOE’s technical explanation describes this as a way a biomass pathway can produce a negative result.

That accounting depends on more than installing capture equipment. The CO2 must be stored durably, and the assessment must still include relevant upstream and operating emissions. A capture rate by itself does not establish that the full hydrogen pathway is net negative.

How should you compare two biogas-hydrogen claims?

Before comparing headline emissions figures, make sure the claims describe comparable pathways and use comparable accounting. Check the following:

  • Feedstock and counterfactual: What material is used, and what alternative management fate earns the avoided-emissions credit?
  • Methane control: Does the accounting include leakage during digestion, upgrading and transport, as applicable?
  • Energy and conversion: What energy supplies digestion, upgrading and hydrogen production, and what hydrogen-production route is modeled?
  • Carbon storage: Is CO2 merely captured, or is durable storage included?
  • Boundary and unit: Is the result well-to-gate or broader, and is it reported per unit of RNG, energy or hydrogen?
  • Model and jurisdiction: Which model release and regulatory method are used? A result from one program should not be assumed to answer a different jurisdiction’s question.

What does 45VH2-GREET cover, and which version should be named?

DOE identifies 45VH2-GREET as the model adopted for determining emissions rates for the U.S. Clean Hydrogen Production Tax Credit. Its January 2025 manual describes well-to-gate accounting. That scope makes the method relevant to the stated U.S. regulatory use, but it is not automatically the right model for every jurisdiction or a complete cradle-to-grave comparison.

As of October 7, 2026, DOE’s GREET page lists 45VH2-GREET December 2025 as the current posted release and says Treasury adopted the model to determine emissions rates for the U.S. Clean Hydrogen Production Tax Credit. Because model releases can change assumptions or results, identify the version used for any calculation and do not silently combine a value from one release with assumptions from another.
