Treat the birth chart as the initial state, a chosen time cycle as an input, explicit rules as transitions, and the resulting configuration as something to interpret. The chart itself does not provide the computational rules, and this model does not establish that BaZi predicts events or life outcomes.
What is BaZi?
BaZi (八字), often called the Four Pillars of Destiny, is a traditional interpretive system built around a chart derived from a person’s birth timing. The chart has four pillars—Year, Month, Day, and Hour—and each pillar pairs a Heavenly Stem with an Earthly Branch. Those four pairs make up the chart’s eight characters.

One BaZi explainer describes the system using five elements—Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water—and identifies the Day Master as the Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar. The Day Master serves as a reference point in interpretation. The same guide notes that chart reading may involve features such as hidden elements, so reducing a chart to a simple count of visible elements would leave out relevant context. The Four Pillars are the Year, Month, Day, and Hour pillars. Each combines one of the ten Heavenly Stems with one of the twelve Earthly Branches; together, the pillars produce eight characters. These are structural descriptions of the BaZi system, not statistical findings.

Chart construction depends on calendrical conventions. For example, MyBaZi describes a new Luck Pillar overlaying the natal chart every ten years. Treat that as the convention stated by that guide, rather than a universal rule that can be applied without specifying a source or school. The guide is available at MyBaZi’s BaZi overview.
What does “state machine” mean?
A finite state machine is a computational model for describing how a system moves among defined states in response to inputs. The National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Dictionary of Algorithms and Data Structures defines it as “A model of computation consisting of a set of states, a start state, an input alphabet, and a transition function that maps input symbols and current states to a next state.” Read the definition in NIST’s Dictionary of Algorithms and Data Structures.

For a useful model, a writer must say what the state contains, what counts as an input, how the transition works, and what the system produces. A BaZi chart supplies a structured representation and interpretive vocabulary; it does not, by itself, specify a computational transition function.

How can BaZi be modeled as a state machine?
Define the model before applying it. The following mapping is one possible representation, not an accepted or canonical BaZi formalization.

What changes when time advances?
In this analogy, the natal chart remains the initial configuration, while the selected time cycle changes the context used by the model. Whether the model treats that cycle as a new input, adds it to the state, or overlays it on the natal chart depends on the rules the writer chooses. That choice should be stated rather than hidden inside an explanation.
A schematic example is: “At time t, the modeled chart is state S. Applying the stated cycle rule produces state S′, whose changed features are then interpreted using the declared BaZi framework.” This illustrates the flow without inventing a person’s chart, asserting a specific calculation, or predicting a life event.

How to tell whether the analogy is rigorous
- States are defined: Can a reader tell exactly which chart features make up each state?
- Inputs are named: Is the time cycle or other context specified, along with its convention?
- Transitions are reproducible: Could another reader apply the stated rule to the same state and input and get the same next state?
- Outputs are operational: Does the model say whether it displays chart features or produces an interpretation?
- Claims match the method: Is the result presented as a description or traditional interpretation, rather than as a validated prediction?
If these points are unspecified, “state machine” is only a metaphor. If they are explicit, it can be a useful way to explain how a chosen BaZi representation changes under a chosen cycle, while keeping the model’s assumptions visible.
Where the comparison ends
The state-machine framework can clarify the structure of an explanation; it does not validate BaZi’s interpretive claims. The BaZi materials cited here describe a traditional chart and reading framework, while NIST defines a computational model. They do not provide a validation study showing that BaZi predicts personality, events, or life outcomes. Nor do the cited materials establish one universal set of BaZi transition rules. The analogy is therefore best understood as a transparent way to organize a representation—not evidence that BaZi is computationally formalized or scientifically predictive.
