It cannot edit text already in a PDF. If changing existing wording is essential, Preview alone is not enough.
What Preview can handle without another editor
Preview covers much of the routine work people mean when they say they need to “edit” a PDF. Apple’s current Preview User Guide for Mac lists markup, forms, page organization, export, password protection, and reducing file size. The exact controls and instructions can vary by macOS release; Apple’s guide selector includes previous releases as well as macOS Tahoe.

Review and feedback
Use highlights, notes, text boxes, shapes, and other markup to comment on a document or call attention to information. These tools add annotations; they do not rewrite the PDF’s original text. Apple explicitly distinguishes the two in its PDF annotation guide.
Forms and signatures
Preview can fill supported PDF form fields and add a signature. Apple documents signature creation using a trackpad, a camera, an iPhone, or an iPad. Enhanced contact AutoFill requires macOS 14.2 or later, and it is not available for every PDF. See Apple’s form-filling and signing instructions for the supported workflow.

Pages and file management
You can combine PDFs and move or reorder pages using the thumbnail sidebar. Preview also provides PDF export, password protection, and file-size reduction in its guide. Those capabilities make it useful for common document handling, but their presence alone does not establish that they meet every specialized workflow or quality requirement.
Where Preview stops: editing existing PDF text
Preview’s key limitation is direct editing of text already in a PDF. Apple states: “Although you can’t edit the text of a PDF in Preview, you can use the markup tools to provide feedback or write down something you want to remember.” A text box placed over a page is an annotation, not a change to the underlying text.

That distinction matters when correcting a typo in the source wording, replacing a paragraph, or otherwise changing the document’s original text. If that is the task, look for an editor whose documented features include editing existing PDF text. The limitation does not mean Preview cannot add comments, signatures, or form entries; those are separate operations.
How to combine PDFs without losing your originals
- Make copies first. Duplicate the source PDFs in Finder if you need to preserve untouched originals. Preview saves changes automatically.
- Open a PDF in Preview and show its page thumbnails so you can see the document’s pages.
- Drag pages between documents. Move the thumbnails into the destination PDF, then arrange them in the desired order. Apple documents this workflow in its PDF-combination guide.
- Review the combined document. Check page order and content, then save or export the result as appropriate.
Decide based on the job, not the label “PDF editor”

For instructions tailored to your system, use Apple’s Preview overview and choose the matching macOS version in the Preview User Guide. Preview is a practical substitute when your work stays within its documented tasks; the need to change existing text is the clearest reason to use something else.
