Antivirus software can stop or remove many malicious files, and related browser or email filters can warn about some dangerous links. It cannot reliably stop a scam that talks you into entering a password on a convincing fake site, sharing a one-time code, installing remote-access software, or sending money. Treat antivirus as one layer in a broader defense that includes updated software, mail and browser protections, phishing-resistant multi-factor authentication (MFA), and independent verification of unexpected requests.
Antivirus and scam prevention are different jobs
Antivirus is primarily designed to detect, block, quarantine, or remove malicious software. Real-time protection watches files and processes as they are opened or executed; scans can find threats that are already stored on a device. That protection matters when a phishing message delivers a malicious attachment, a drive-by download, ransomware, a password-stealing program, or a remote-access tool.

A scam can succeed without installing anything. A criminal may copy a bank’s branding, create a realistic sign-in page, and persuade you to type your password and verification code into it. The browser may see an ordinary web page, and the antivirus engine may have no malicious file to identify. Likewise, a fraudster can convince someone to buy gift cards, transfer funds, or authorize a payment during a phone call. The device remains technically clean while the victim loses an account or money.
Microsoft describes Defender Antivirus as real-time protection against viruses and malware and separately recommends using a modern browser that can identify phishing and malware websites. Keeping those roles separate prevents a dangerous assumption: a clean antivirus scan does not prove that a message, website, caller, or payment request is legitimate.

What antivirus can catch
- Malicious downloads: Executable files, scripts, office documents with harmful content, and bundled installers may be blocked, quarantined, or flagged.
- Installed malware: A full scan can locate malware that bypassed an earlier warning or arrived through another channel.
- Suspicious behavior: Modern endpoint protection may stop programs that attempt credential theft, unauthorized encryption, persistence, or unusual system changes.
- Known malicious attachments: Security software integrated with mail or the operating system may inspect an attachment before it opens.
Detection is not absolute. New malware, altered files, encrypted content, and previously unseen attack infrastructure can evade signatures or behavior rules. A warning can also be a false alarm, so use the product’s reporting and review controls rather than disabling protection whenever something is blocked.
Does antivirus block phishing websites?
Sometimes, but a warning is not a guarantee. Browser reputation systems and security products compare a URL or page behavior with information about reported phishing and malware sites. Microsoft Defender SmartScreen, for example, analyzes pages for suspicious behavior and checks visited sites against a dynamic list of reported phishing and malicious-software sites. When a match or concern is found, it displays a warning.
Reputation systems are useful because they can stop a known campaign before credentials or a download are submitted. They are necessarily limited, however:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- A newly created domain may not yet have a bad reputation.
- Attackers can compromise a legitimate site or hide a fake page behind a shortened or redirected link.
- A page may be fraudulent without delivering malware, so a malware-focused scanner has less evidence to act on.
- Criminals can change domains, page content, and hosting quickly.
Read the address bar, not just the page design. A lock icon indicates an encrypted connection, not an honest operator. A familiar logo, correct spelling in the page text, or a URL that contains a trusted name somewhere in a longer domain does not establish authenticity.

Can antivirus stop scam emails and messages?
Email providers and security gateways can reduce exposure by filtering spam, scanning attachments, and checking links against malicious or suspicious destinations. Similar controls may exist in workplace mail, SMS apps, social platforms, and webmail. They complement device antivirus because a scam can start in an email, text message, chat, social-media post, or advertisement.
Filtering is a risk reduction measure, not a judgment that every message reaching your inbox is safe. Sophisticated messages may use a compromised account, a newly registered domain, or a legitimate cloud service. In 2024, email was the top method scammers used to contact people, according to Federal Trade Commission consumer guidance published in April 2025. That is a contact-method finding, not a count of phishing attempts, a loss estimate, or a measurement of antivirus performance.
Before opening an attachment or following a link, inspect the actual sender address and destination. Be particularly cautious when a message demands urgent payment, asks for a password or personal information, requests a one-time code, or tells you to install software. Familiar branding is easy to copy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Use a separate route to confirm the request. Do not use the link, reply address, QR code, or telephone number supplied in the suspicious message.

- Pause. Urgency is a common social-engineering technique. Do not let a countdown, threat of closure, or claim that someone is waiting force an immediate decision.
- Inspect the details. Expand the sender information, read the complete address, and preview the destination without opening it when your mail or browser supports that feature. Treat misspellings, unexpected domains, and unusual payment instructions as warning signs.
- Open a known route. Type the organization’s established web address yourself, use a bookmark you saved previously, or open its official app. For a financial account, call the number on your card or statement rather than the number in the message.
- Confirm a personal request separately. If a message appears to come from a colleague or relative, call them using a known number or start a new conversation through a different channel.
- Check the transaction independently. Review your account or order history from the known site. Never approve a login or payment notification you did not initiate.
- Report and delete. Use the mail or messaging service’s phishing-report function. In the United States, consumer fraud can also be reported to the Federal Trade Commission.
Build a layered defense
Keep the operating system and applications current
Install security updates for your operating system, browser, extensions, and security software. Updates close vulnerabilities that attackers can exploit after a link is opened or a document is viewed. Turn on automatic updates where practical, and restart when an update requires it.
Use MFA, preferably phishing-resistant MFA
MFA limits the damage of a stolen password, but not all methods resist phishing equally. CISA’s guidance identifies phishing-resistant MFA as the strongest protection among the methods it discusses. Where supported, a FIDO2 security key or passkey can cryptographically bind authentication to the legitimate website, making a fake page unable to use the response.
MFA does not filter messages or block scam websites. A criminal can still pressure you to approve an unexpected push notification or disclose a code. Deny prompts you did not initiate, and contact the service if repeated prompts continue.
Separate passwords and protect recovery channels
Use a unique password for every important account and store it in a reputable password manager. If one password is exposed, reuse turns a single phishing event into multiple account takeovers. Secure the email account that handles password resets, and review recovery addresses, phone numbers, active sessions, and authorized applications.

Use mail, browser, and endpoint controls together
Enable your provider’s spam and malicious-link protection, keep browser safe-browsing warnings on, and leave real-time endpoint protection enabled. In a workplace, administrators should combine gateway filtering, endpoint detection, DNS or web controls, logging, and an easy reporting path. No single layer sees every part of a social-engineering attack.

Clicking alone does not prove that your device or account is compromised. Your next actions depend on what happened after the click.
If you only opened the page
- Close the tab without downloading files or entering information.
- Update the browser and operating system if they are not current.
- Run a full scan with your installed security software.
- Report the message and watch for follow-up attempts.
If you entered a password
- From the service’s known website or app, change the password immediately.
- Change it anywhere else you reused it.
- Enable MFA, preferably a phishing-resistant method.
- Review recent sign-ins, sessions, forwarding rules, recovery settings, and connected applications; revoke anything unfamiliar.
- Tell your employer or school IT team if the account is managed by them.
If you shared payment details or sent money
Contact the bank, card issuer, payment service, or wire-transfer provider using a number from a statement or card. Explain that it was fraud and ask what reversal, account lock, or card-replacement steps are available. Monitor transactions and preserve messages, receipts, phone numbers, and transaction identifiers for the investigation.

How to evaluate an antivirus or security suite for scam risk
Do not judge a product solely by the word “antivirus.” Compare the layers it actually covers and the conditions under which a warning appears.
| Protection layer | What it can help with | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|
| Malware files and behavior | Blocks downloads, malicious attachments, and harmful programs | That a person, payment request, or clean-looking page is genuine |
| Email filtering and link scanning | Reduces spam and flags known malicious destinations or attachments | That every message reaching the inbox is safe |
| Browser and site reputation | Warns about reported or suspicious phishing and malware sites | That a new or unreported fraudulent site will be detected |
| Account authentication | MFA and passkeys reduce the value of stolen passwords | That a user will not approve a fraudulent prompt or transfer money |
Also check supported operating systems and browsers, whether protection works before data is submitted, how false alarms are handled, what data is collected, and how incidents are reported. Available features and interface labels can change, so verify the current documentation for your edition and region. There is no established consumer antivirus phishing-block percentage that can be applied across products from the information available here; a paid suite cannot guarantee safety.
Common situations and the right response
“Your account will be closed today”
Do not click the warning link. Open the service through a saved bookmark or typed address and check notifications there. Contact support through the official site if the warning is not visible in your account.
“Your manager needs gift cards immediately”
Stop the purchase and call the manager using a known number. A reply to the original message is not independent confirmation, especially if the sender account may be compromised.
“A technician found a virus on your computer”
Unsolicited pop-ups and calls are not proof of an infection. Do not grant remote access or install software at the caller’s direction. Close the browser, run your own security scan, and contact the device maker or a trusted support provider through an independently obtained channel.
“Approve this login”
Deny an MFA prompt you did not initiate. Change the password from the legitimate service and investigate active sessions. Repeated prompts can mean someone already has your password.
The practical answer
Antivirus is worth keeping enabled because it can block malware that phishing delivers and can help clean an infected device. Its protection stops short of human persuasion: no scan can reliably tell you that a convincing request is honest or prevent every voluntary transfer of secrets and money. The safest approach combines real-time malware protection, mail and browser warnings, prompt updates, unique passwords, phishing-resistant MFA, and verification through a contact method you obtain independently.
