Usually, not the dish itself. A satellite dish and an over-the-air (OTA) antenna receive different kinds of signals. To watch local broadcast channels, connect a purpose-built OTA antenna to your TV and scan for channels. The coax cable left by a satellite installation may be reusable, but its compatibility depends on the cable route and any attached splitters, switches, or powered components.
What parts of the old satellite setup can you use?

How to connect an OTA antenna and scan for channels
- Connect the OTA antenna to the TV’s input labeled Antenna In, Air, or Cable, as applicable to your television. DISH’s setup instructions call for an OTA antenna connected to the TV. DISH: HDTV Over-the-Air Antenna Support
- If the TV asks you to choose between Air and Cable, choose Air for an antenna.
- Run the television’s automatic channel scan. The menu name varies by TV; look for a channel setup or auto-scan option.
- If no channels appear, check the connection, reposition the antenna, and scan again. Reception and available stations vary by location, so a scan cannot guarantee a particular channel lineup.
Check whether the TV has a digital tuner
Some older televisions may need a digital converter box to receive OTA broadcasts. Check the TV’s manual or labels for terms such as DTV, HDTV, ATSC, or digital tuner. Can you reuse the old satellite coax?
Possibly, but the fact that a cable was used for satellite service does not confirm that the entire installation will work for OTA reception. The route may include splitters, switches, or power inserters, and compatibility depends on the actual wiring and components. The available setup guidance does not certify an unidentified satellite installation for OTA use.
- Trace or identify the cable route and the components between the antenna location and the TV.
- Do not connect an OTA antenna through unidentified powered satellite equipment.
- If you cannot identify the components or wiring, have the installation checked before reusing it.
Rules for installing an antenna in the United States
The FCC’s consumer guide describes protections for certain antennas installed in areas under an owner’s or tenant’s exclusive use or control. It includes antennas designed for local television broadcasts, while noting safety and historic-preservation exceptions. The guide says the rule does not apply to common areas such as many shared roofs or exterior walls. These are general U.S. guidelines, not a determination of what is permitted in a particular building or situation.
